In the Walkway Gallery Donovan Christie – Everyday’s a Birthday Growing up as a '90s kid, Donovan Christie was shaped by outdoor adventures, DIY fun, and the magic of childhood birthdays. Nostalgia runs through his art, connecting his focus on the Australian landscape and pop culture—from humble corner stores to milk bars. In this new series, Christie turns indoors to the suburban kitchen, exploring the chaos and charm of kids’ birthdays through the lens of the iconic 1980s Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Book. Raised by a single mother, he learned resilience, independence, and creativity early—lessons that fueled his journey from graffiti to canvas. This exhibition is dedicated to her. The Art Gallery of South Australia’s focused yet significant collection of moving image works by Australian and international artists illustrates this medium’s dynamism and the diverse nature of acquisitions within the collection, with the earliest example of the moving image being from 1929.
