MOSAIC ARTS a creative community
Non-profit Mosaic Arts & Events offers so much to the Sioux Falls surrounding community while supporting artful endeavors and communal events, Mosaic education director Anna Hudelson says. “Our mission is to provide affordable art classes for all ages and abilities. The founder, Dr. Rose Faithe , purchased the building in 2005 and opened it as the Museum of Visual Materials in 2007,” said Hudelson. “Over the years, it's changed a lot.” The building previously had art and other items on display, as well as learning activities. Now, Hudelson says the focus is centered around art classes and programming. Mosaic has always aspired to be a creative space, open to the community, where people can come and have attentive, hands-on learning opportunities.

“The rebrand was intended to clearly communicate to the community we're a place for arts and events, and then also to reintroduce ourselves to the community and people who maybe didn't know we were here and make them aware of the services we provide,” said executive director Deanna Parker . Mosaic offers both youth and adult classes, along with private classes and field trip opportunities for groups and organizations of all ages. “I hope people continue to seek us out for art classes and events and know we're here and provide those services,” added Parker. Signing up for classes and scheduling private classes can be booked through the Mosaic website. “Many of Anna’s classes offer a step- by-step structure, with an art history education lesson,” said Parker. “It's also a very safe and comfortable space for attendees to create.”
“People are incredibly thankful and supportive of us, and we see nonprofits return every single year, which is great. We love nonprofits, so we want to see more of them come in here as well.” deanna parker

Hudelson has been with Mosaic for over 11 years, providing life-long learning through classes and engaging with all attendees. “She has a lot of classes with open creative time, from our youngest students who are 2 years old, all the way up to our adult students and adults with disabilities, and the residents in nursing homes she works with,” said Parker. Mosaic provides all kinds of classes with topics including group and pottery-wheel projects, paper mache, watercolors, air-dry clay, and more. Some classes include story time and cover artists, such as Henri Matisse . A comfortable, familiar space is offered for participants to be creative and express themselves while being exposed to new forms of art, all while keeping the cost low.

Having affordable prices allows for more people to experience the creative process of artistic endeavors, and also allows for direct interaction with the
materials, Hudelson adds. As a nonprofit, part of the
organization’s mission is to support other non-profit organizations in whatever ways they can, events and marketing manager Claire Litzen says. “Mosaic offers a discounted rate for nonprofits, especially local ones here in town,” said Litzen. “We always take local nonprofits into consideration, and if it's an art fundraiser, we're always willing to hear them out and welcome them into our space.” Litzen says people getting married in the Mosaic space can feel good about where their money is going since it directly helps fund the art program, impacting a variety of people. “We do our art show event once a year in April called Arts Apps, and Taps , and we have local artists and all of the art from our students on display,” said Hudelson. “That's our big art show, free to the public.”

The inspiration for Sioux Falls social experience was found on a visit to another large golf chain by Sanford executives. They were so impressed they approached the chain about partnering, but the proposal was declined. “Sanford leadership said, ‘You know what, we're going to build our own,’ and so they went to various facilities like ours in the region and used the best practices from all those places to form what would be the first Great Shots,” said operations manager John Lorang . After closing for a few months in the fall of 2024 for renovations, Great Shots reopened this past November with new turf, new games, and an expanded menu. Open year-round with climate-controlled bays and a 250- yard driving range, Lorang says Great Shots is the perfect place for friends, family, coworkers, or teams to bond. “Being part of the Sanford Sports Complex is a perfect marriage for us,” said Lorang. “We really have a ‘one team’ philosophy out here, and we're able to help support some of our other buildings in other parts of the complex.”

Along with Great Shots, the Sanford Sports Complex, which sees 2.7 million visitors annually, includes sports venues, hotels, restaurants and an acute care clinic. “We're making special moments here all the time, and that's something we hope our guests can see, and hope they get to do that each time they come out this way with a new favorite memory,” added Lorang. He believes Great Shots provides valuable
experiences for not only the surrounding community of Sioux Falls, but also for visitors traveling in to watch or participate in sporting or entertainment events happening at the complex. “Our facility caters to all ages and all levels of skill for golfers,” said Lorang. “We're able to provide an experience to highlight what's great about Sioux Falls—the sports complex, the growing community, and the friendly people we have here.”

Great Shots, fit with 60 bays and three levels, along with the entire sports complex, is designed to be a family-friendly experience, while also providing six event spaces available to rent, including The Champions Club . “It’s an exciting time, because this last anniversary we added some new food and drink items, took our food to another level, and elevated our bay technology, adding some great aspects here,” elaborated Lorang. Updates were also made to the private, indoor golf simulator room, which is equipped with Trackman technology. Reservations are available two weeks in advance, and include the Trackman Simulator Room , a beverage cooler, seating for up to four people, club storage, three TVs, and optional food and beverage add-ons. For other ways for guests to improve their game, Great Shots provides opportunities for golf skill development through the Sanford Sports Academy , while working with PGA- Certified golfers to help participants develop their technique. Performance analysis and strength training are also available to help elevate golfing abilities. Youth and adult classes are offered with focuses on swing, putting, driving, chipping, stance, and grip.

& AIR MADNESS
When a new ownership group took over Air Madness in Harrisburg January of 2022, a new vision took over as well. “After we purchased the business, we made a lot of changes, did some revamps, some remodeling, and made it our own,” said director of operations and events manager Rachelle Smith . This included the Valo Jump and Valo Arena , where participants can turn themselves into an on- screen character while playing interactive games.
expand, and be better, whether that was swapping attractions within the park, updating older items, making things new and fresh,” said Smith. Each area was carefully thought out, says Smith, like the designated Little Air for smaller jumpers and attractions like Air Time Dunk Court for both younger and older guests. Special events like Cosmic Nights also are a different way to experience Air Madness, where the space transforms into a blacklight party with lasers, strobes, and music every Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to close.

Smith says even with the updates, it seemed a demographic was missing. “When it came to wanting to grab the older demographic and make a fun space for adults, it was obvious we needed to move outside of a trampoline park,” said Smith. The ownership group set their sights on an unused basketball gym across the hall, but wanted to have a plan in place first. Smith says they traveled to facilities in places like Wisconsin, Texas, and Arizona for inspiration. “We took all of our ideas and meshed it into what we wanted— this vibe—and what we wanted our offerings to look like,” recalled Smith The “vibe” was to bring Harrisburg a destination for bowling, axe- throwing, and “arcade action,” all with a full menu restaurant. “We wanted it to be a place where adults could come and feel like they were not out of place, participating or scheduling an event, or hanging out with friends,” said Smith.

“WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THIS WAS A PROFESSIONALLY DESIGNED, PROFESSIONALLY BUILT, PROFESSIONALLY DRAWN UP PLACE.” Rachelle Smith
The new attraction was dubbed Union Social , and the ownership wanted it to be fun, yet upscale. In order to accomplish this, Smith says they hired Megan Renee of Renee Designs to make their project come to life. “From the lighting, to the seating, to the colors, to the art—everything was so specifically chosen by our designer, and she created what I think is an upscale, but also hip and classy atmosphere,” said Smith. Union Social opened November of 2024 with 12 state-of-the-art bowling lanes, six axe-throwing lanes, and 50 arcade games. The food menu includes shareables like the popular Buffalo Pita Dip , handhelds like the Panko Chicken Sandwich , Smash Burgers like the Blazing Beast , and flatbreads like the Pleased to Meat You . “Our food and beverage director, Francisco [ Gajardo ], has put every thought into every detail of his menu he created,” said Smith. “And when he doesn't like something, he changes it until he likes it.”

The most popular item on the menu is the Union Smash with a smashed beef patty topped with cheddar, house-made aioli, lettuce, tomato, red onion, dill pickle, and a grilled bun. Smith recommends the flatbreads, and notes the crust is the shining star. “I've never had a better flatbread in my entire life. They're absolutely amazing,” she said. Offering both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, Union Social also has signature cocktails, like the Blood Orange Old Fashioned or the Eat the Worm-Rita . One of the cocktails—the Rachellatini —is named after Smith and is her take on an Espresso Martini with Van Gogh Espresso Vodka , Licor 43 , Bailey’s Irish Cream , and chocolate.

Both Air Madness and Union Social are busy year-round with hosting events like birthday parties and holiday and corporate gatherings. Smith says Union Social is already booking Christmas parties for 2025 and are fielding requests for “after prom” bookings in 2026. One unique party option at Air Madness is The Conquer Gaming Party , renting a fully-private gaming suite with a party package finalizing Adult Parties that will be offered starting this month or in May, which has details mostly under wraps, but Smith gave 605 a teaser. “We have a cool design with a cocktail tower and all these fun things,” said Smith. “We’re going to have a very special birthday drink for adult birthday packages, and I'm going to keep that a secret because I want it to be awe-inspiring.” for jumping and gaming. Union Social is working on Smith says the destination is the best of both worlds, as kids of appropriate ages can jump while older kids and adults can be in the arcade, grabbing a bite, or bowling or axe-throwing at a lane nearby.

While both Union Social and Air Madness see guests from surrounding areas and other states, Smith says both businesses have felt Harrisburg’s support. “The Harrisburg community itself has sort of that really small town feel where I do feel like everybody's supportive of the community,” said Smith. There are talks of more Air Madness updates in the future, like updating the Ninja Course and possibly adding a large indoor play/climbing structure. “We do plan to continue to revamp, refresh, and revitalize Air Madness,” said Smith. “We hope to always continue to refresh.” The ownership group says they want both brands to always be more than what guests expect. Smith said, “The atmosphere is different. The food is elevated. The activities included are just better. Everything's better.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT UNION SOCIALSF. COM AND AIRMADNESS. “Flourish is about the whole person,” said Sarah Roe , certified nurse midwife (CNM) and co-owner at Flourish Wellness & Birth Co. “We want to help individuals get to the root cause of their symptoms, while building lasting relationships where they feel seen, known, and heard.” CNM, co-owner, and sister Erin Vande Lune and Roe say Flourish all began from their early careers as midwives in Sioux Falls.
“We honestly really never thought we’d get the chance to work together, but when Sanford Health had an opening for two midwives, we were hired and got to share an office and be in the same practice,” said Vande Lune. “It was the sweetest gift.” Things changed during the pandemic, the sisters recall, as they started to see patients with more fear and anxiety with all of the unknowns, and noticed a shift in hospital protocols and procedures.

THE FAMILY ISSUE april 2025
“One of the biggest things Sarah and I struggled with was watching moms ‘mom’ alone,” said Vande Lune. “Community was something that really got us through those pregnancies, and especially the young kiddo years. That remained so important to us, and we felt that start to go away, whether it was in clinic appointments, the way things disrupted
between families related to the pandemic, if a kid touched another kid at the park…” That shift triggered dreams of starting their own clinic as the first free-standing, midwife- owned birth center in South Dakota. The name stemmed from the company’s goal to optimize patients’ health, find the cause of
symptoms or illness, and empower them to flourish in their communities. “We are passionate about creating a safe, welcoming space where each family receives personalized, compassionate care tailored to their unique journey,” said Roe.
“We wanted to build a place inSioux Falls where we could offer community & support in a way that looked different than homebirth & looked different than the hospital, yet bridges the gap & offers something in the middle."
