Military and Veterans Affairs Commission Review
By E. Maquel Marshall, MVAC Member
A s we move into the new year, we notice one thing and that is the continued emergence of Kappa Alpha Psi's Military and Veterans Affairs Commission (MVAC) as one of Kappa’s strongest commissions and its continued dedica- tion to not only assisting our brothers; but working to enhance the lives of cadets, all serving military, Veterans, their families and the fraternity’s youth programs. To maintain this level of achievement, MVAC has expanded its team over the past 12 months. This has allowed their endeavors to reach beyond the plans of the initial vision of the 33 rd Administration of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Provinces and even local chapters have formed MVAC Committees in order to push the agenda set forth by MVAC and Grand Chapter. Due to continuous outreach to our Kappa Brothers whom are active military and Veterans, their families and those youth in the communities we serve, MVAC has been able to provide information and know-how for those in need of VA benefits, compen- sation, health-care, memorial services, leadership development, STEM and other disciplines as needed. MVAC's vow to support and recognize our cadets, serving Military members and Veterans for their military and public service has not changed and will continue to be its primary purpose. However, because of the supportive team that MVAC has established, the commission has been able to branch out to provide more assistance in youth and community programs, within and outside of Kappa Alpha Psi. MVAC has made some recent accomplishments such as: • Hosting its Second Military and Veterans Awards Banquet during the 84 th Grand Chapter Meeting • Hosting its Second U.S. Depart- ment of Veterans Affairs (VA) Pavil- ion during the 84 th Grand Chapter Meeting
• Nomination for the Distinguished Service Award by the Military Of- ficers Association (MOAA) • Participation in the Inaugural Minority Veterans Summit, hosted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Af- fairs – Center for Minority Veterans • Participation in the 2017-19 Kappa Kamp at Paul Quinn College where our Brothers, Major General Patrick Sargent, Dr. Sam Odom and Colonel Myles Caggins III, were present to provide youth guidance • Continuous support of the Kappa National Founders’ Day • Execute plans set forth during the 84 th Grand Chapter Meeting in Philadelphia, PA to include assisting in raising over $100,000 in sponsor- ships in support of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. including MVAC endeavors • MVAC continues to fine-tune its efforts to provide additional support to: o Kappas on Capitol Hill o Province Council Meetings o National Guide Right Programs o C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conferences o Military Mentoring Programs o Local Undergraduate, Alumni Chapter Military and Veteran Endeavors MVAC has welcomed Brigadier Gen- eral Gavin Lawrence as the successor to Major General Kevin Vereen as the Senior Military Representative. Major General (Ret.) Hawthorne “Peet” Proc- tor, MVAC Chairman, gives thanks to Brother Vereen for his continued sup- port of the MVAC efforts and wishes him the best as he takes on his new duties as the Provost Marshall Gen- eral of the U.S. Army and the Com- manding General U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command.
