KAM ILAH PORTFOLIO
My name is Kamilah Rodriguez, and I’m a proud Mexican American from Dallas, Texas. Growing up, I was always drawn to the creative arts. I’ve cherished the idea of creating something that others can not only admire but deeply appreciate. My passion for interior design stems from my mother, who worked as a housekeeper for many years. She takes immense pride in her work and always reminds me that im- proving a space can have a positive impact on people’s lives. I’ve carried those values with me and apply them to everything I do.
As a first-generation college student, I am incredibly proud to be pursuing my dreams and building a future that embodies my passion for interior design. Growing up in a small, two-bedroom house with a family of five, I discovered how meaningful it was to dream of spaces where I could express myself. I remember sketching out a closet that led to a secret tunnel, opening up to a cozy room filled with a TV, all my favorite snacks, and a place where I felt free to be me. It was through these imaginative moments that I realized my love for designing spaces—spaces that are not only functional but also make people feel safe, comfortable, and inspired.
Being Mexican American deeply shapes who I am, infusing my work and creativity with cultural richness and a strong sense of family and community. This passion drives me to continue learning about the values and aspects of interior design, so I can create environments that resonate with people and leave a lasting impact.

even uplift moods, fostering positivity and improving morale. Let’s create a lasting impression together!
PINK PEONY Floral arrangements are a beautiful way to express emotions, set a mood, or enhance a space. Among the many flowers, pink peonies stand out for their symbolism and charm. Pink peonies are often associated with love, compassion, and femininity. They are also believed to bring good luck and prosperity, making them a meaningful choice for arrangements. Their soft yet striking color adds a touch of elegance and warmth, perfect for creating a memorable display. When helping a guest who needs a simple ar- rangement with hints of color, I would focus on a minimalist design that highlights the beauty of the pink peonies. Pairing them with fresh eucalyptus for a touch of texture and adding pops of vibrant blooms The result would be a thoughtful and visually appealing composition that meets the guest’s needs while showcasing the timeless allure of pink peonies. Naturalistic Design Naturalistic design emphasizes harmo- ny with nature, using organic forms, natural materials, and elements inspired by the environment to create balanced, sustainable, and connected spaces.
High Triangular Design
High triangular design highlights bold, elevated triangular forms, known for their strength, stability, and striking geometric appeal.
DAHLIA Dahlias, known for their vibrant beauty, sym- bolize inner strength, positive change, and ele- gance, making them a meaningful choice for floral arrangements. When assisting a guest seeking a simple design with hints of color, I would high- light bold dahlias as the focal point. Pairing them with eucalyptus adds texture and freshness, while incorporating subtle accent blooms in comple- mentary shades introduces just the right touch of vibrancy. This balance creates a clean yet striking arrangement that is both memorable and graceful.
LA CASA DE XAMNEK
CANCUN, MEXICO
PROJECT STATEMENT Josie McGowan, a 30-year-old Caucasian female expatriate planning to move to Cancun, Mexico, as an independent consultant contracted with a well-established global marketing firm. She wants a custom condo inspired by Hispanic culture. Considerations include layered lighting, cultural appreciation, wheelchair accessibility, and ensuring the home serves as a conversation starter. The condo will be constructed in the next 60 months before the client occupies the space. Josie enjoys art, fitness, and hosting events for her friends and family. She also has a busy schedule restricting plants and pets from her lifestyle. Hispanic design is inspired by nature, so to accommodate this, the design will incorporate earth tones to balance the home, as well as floral illustration decor, inspired art, and hints of vibrant colors like natural elements coming from nature.

“Growing up in a traditional Hispanic household, my father worked in construction from the moment he arrived in the U.S. He would often talk about being part of some of Dallas’s most prominent construction projects, proudly pointing out the buildings he helped create. He felt blessed and proud to contribute to something bigger than himself. That conversation taught me an invaluable lesson: whenever I take on a project, I remind myself how fortunate I am for the opportunity and make sure every task, big or small, is done with care and gratitude.”
Oak Cliff
HOME Oak Cliff, Texas, is a place steeped in history, known widely for its connection to the events sur- rounding the JFK assassination. Today, it stands as a vibrant and proud community, deeply rooted in its rich Hispanic heritage. Oak Cliff embodies creativity, culture, and a strong sense of family values that resonate throughout its streets. For me, this neighborhood holds a special place in my heart as it inspires so much of my passion for graphic art and the beauty of Latin culture. It’s a space where tradition meets innovation, where the bonds of family and community remain unshakable. In recent years, Oak Cliff has blossomed, and nowhere is this more evident than in the bustling and colorful Bishop Arts District, which has become a hub for local businesses, artistry, and connection. Oak Cliff isn’t just a neighborhood; it’s a tapestry of stories, a celebration of life, and a testament to the power of community. PHOTOGRAPHY

BARNDOMINIUM PHOENIX, ARIZONA
PROJECT STATEMENT Welcome to the Richardson family household! This neurodivergent family includes two work-from-home parents, a twelve-year-old daughter with ADHD and anxiety, an eight-year-old daughter with autism, a sixteen-month-old son, and a thirty-four-year-old nanny. They recently bought 6,720 acres in Phoenix, Arizona, to build a barndominium. The barndominium needs to be flexible, homeschool-friendly, have a three-car garage, and be sustainable. The kids love Legos, drawing, and reading. The design vision is inspired by the Phoenix sunset, aiming for a modest, homey, and organized feel. An open layout with neutral colors will help avoid overwhelm, while dim lighting can prevent migraines and overstimulation. Activity rooms with organized storage bins will help the children develop a healthy routine. The goal is to create a healthy environment that supports the children’s development and the parents’ mental health.

CONCEPT STATEMENT KHONSU
In this project, the task was to build a luminaire to understand the basics of form. The concept of the luminaire is inspired by basic architecture and the album cover of “The Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd. During the brainstorming process, the initial association with basic architecture led to the Egyptian pyramids. The pyramid is considered to be the oldest and sturdiest man-made construction. When compared to the Pink Floyd album, the triangle has a glimmer of light emanating from one end. This was the inspiration, along with the album’s name, “The Dark Side of the Moon,” which was translated into Egyptian as Khonsu, named after an Egyptian god.

HAND SKILLS
A presentation drawing class is designed to teach students how to create refined and professional drawings that effectively communicate ideas and concepts. In this class, students often learn techniques for enhancing their artistic skills, focusing on precision, visual storytelling, and the use of elements like shading, texture, perspective, and color to make their work stand out. The goal of the class is to help students develop the ability to present their ideas in a clear and visually appealing way— whether it’s for architectural plans, product designs, advertisements, or even art exhibitions. It emphasizes the importance of turning rough sketches into polished and detailed drawings that leave a lasting impression on the viewer. The goal of the class is to help students develop the ability to present their ideas in a clear and visually appealing way— whether it’s for architectural plans, prod- uct designs, advertisements, or even art exhibitions. It emphasizes the importance of turning rough sketches into polished and detailed drawings that leave a lasting impression on the viewer.
P resentation Drawings serves as a gateway to the dynamic world of visual communication in design, enabling students to evolve their ability to convey ideas with both precision and creativity. The course begins with mastering fundamental black pencil sketches, which provide a solid foundation in proportions, perspectives, and essential drawing techniques, sharpening observational skills and understanding spatial relationships. As students progress to using colored pencils and architectural markers, their work gains vibrancy and depth, helping them visualize materials, textures, and lighting—key components of interior and architectural design. This progression offers numerous benefits, including enhanced visualization and technical skills, clearer communication of ideas, and increased confidence in creativity.
Experimenting with advanced tools also contributes to portfolio building, showcasing versatility and depth in visual representation—a crucial asset for academic and professional growth. Ultimately, this structured approach fosters not only technical expertise but also innovative thinking and effective presentation.
M y perspective drawing of a room with a window overlooking the ocean and a boat reflects both my technical skills and creative vision. I used the window as a focal point to frame the serene ocean and the dynamic presence of the boat, drawing attention to the peaceful view beyond. By incorporating these elements, I aimed to create a sense of depth and openness, making the space feel connected to nature and inviting.
The process of creating this drawing aligned closely with what I learned in my Presentation Drawings course. I started with black pencil sketches to establish the geometry of the room and ensure accurate perspective lines leading to the vanishing point. This solid foundation helped me achieve a balanced and harmonious composition. Through this project, I was able to apply many of the benefits of the course. The exercise sharpened my ability to visualize and communicate my ideas clearly, while experimenting with colors and advanced tools boosted my confidence in expressing my unique style.
My favorite stage of a project is the initial meeting with a client. First impressions can genuinely influence how the client feels about the project, and you as a team or designer. Truly listening to the client can make them feel valued and important. What is your favorite stage of a project?

“One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned during my design journey is the importance of patience. Working with difficult people is sometimes inevitable, but I’ve discovered that being understanding, direct, and respectful can overcome most challenges. By taking the time to listen and empathize with others, even when situations are tough, I’ve been able to navigate conflicts and collaborate effectively. This approach not only resolves issues but also builds stronger relationships, ultimately leading to better outcomes in my projects.”

“My design philosophy revolves around creating spaces that tell a story. I believe that every design should be an immersive journey, inviting people to explore and discover hidden details connected to a central concept. By incorporating pops of color and unique textures, I add depth and excitement to modern designs with an edge. Custom elements are key— they allow me to craft one-of-a-kind experiences that spark conversations and leave lasting impressions. Ultimately, I strive to create environments that not only meet functional needs but also resonate on a personal level, making people feel a part of the story unfolding around them.”
THANK YOU
Thank you for pausing to visit this space and for taking the time to learn more about me and the journey I’m on. Your attention is deeply appreciated—it’s a gift that inspires me to keep growing and sharing my story. Interior design isn’t just a career or a major to me; it’s a reflection of how I see the world—a beautiful interplay of creativity, structure, and human connection. As I hone my skills and immerse myself in this field, I realize that my journey in design is profoundly intertwined with the remarkable women who have shaped the person I am today. These women are my guiding lights, each contributing uniquely to my growth and passions. They’ve taught me to approach the design process with patience and care, to embrace the challenges and trust in the magic of trial and error. They’ve inspired my creativity, helping me see the world not just for what it is, but for the beauty of what it can become. In every sketch, every plan, every concept, I hear their voices reminding me to be bold, to trust myself, and to pour my heart into every detail. When I’ve felt uncertain, they’ve pointed me in the right direction with unwavering wisdom and love. When I’ve stumbled, they’ve been there—not just to pick me up but to remind me that falling is part of the journey, part of the learning, part of the art of life itself. Their endless support and encouragement have given me the bravery to dream big and the confidence to chase those dreams with purpose and passion. These women are the foundation of my strength, my vision, and my character. Without their love and guidance, I wouldn’t be the person I am today—someone who is eager to design spaces that resonate with the heart, someone who believes in the power of connection and creativity. So, to you—the reader—I say this with all my heart: thank you for being part of this story. Thank you for your time, for your interest, and for sharing in this journey. I hope you see, in this profile and in my work, the echoes of their love, their wisdom, and their boundless belief in me. Your presence here means the world.
