Lawrence Paper Co. (CONT’D FROM PAGE 28)

The facility in Lawrence is essentially a two-shift opera- tion. The corrugator runs two shifts and the company runs “mixed shifts” on its other converting equipment, depend- ing on demand. “At certain times of year, we run one shift on the converting side,” says Packard. “We’ve also added employees, not so much to accommodate the investment in capital equipment, but to meet the increased sales de- mand for our products and to get getting more boxes out the door.” “It all depends on where the competition is,” adds Hill. “We cover the area to the western Kansas border, which is about 400 miles, and to the north Kansas border. The Fremont sheet plant handles Nebraska, western Iowa, and southern South Dakota. The sheet plant in Hutchin- son dips down into the northern tier of Oklahoma. To the east, Lawrence Paper serves an area as far as Columbia, Missouri.” Packard says that the company continues to “hold its own” in the very competitive market of Kansas City, which has several integrateds, as well as independents, com- peting for market share. “It’s definitely a healthy market,” he says, adding that during the pandemic, the company shipped a “reasonable amount” of products nationwide and outside of its usual sales territory, which was new for the company. “We’ve had capacity to share at certain points and we’ve been able to satisfy that demand. Wheth- er that continues is another story,” he says.

A Sprawling Campus The aforementioned “campus” in Lawrence compris- es 55 acres and 750,000-square-feet “under roof” in six buildings; the company runs its own software and opera- tions system and has a building dedicated to IT develop- ment; it also has a fulfillment operation in multiple build- ings. There are 225 employees in Lawrence and a total

of 350 at the three locations combined. A force of eight inside and outside salespersons service the companies’ ever-growing markets. Lawrence Paper runs two newer Apstar Die Cutters from Haire Group at Jayhawk Boxes and American Packaging.

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.
