In addition to the Fosber 98-inch corrugator and Kohler Rod Coater for tinting and functional coatings in its Lawrence facility, the machinery “family” is a converters dream: an Isowa Falcon Flexo Folder Gluer, a Bobst RDC, a Bobst Mastercut Flatbed Die Cutter, an Engico Jumbo Flexo Folder Gluer, a Bobst Expertfold 350 with Poly Join- er, and a Gazzella Gluer Stitcher from Stitching & Gluing, a machine that Hill insists on having in every plant. At the Fremont plant, a new Bobst Expertfold replaced a Tanabe specialty gluer that has been moved to Amer- ican Packaging in Hutchinson, which is nearing com- pletion of a 100,000-square-foot addition to its existing 50,000-square-foot sheet plant. In addition to moving the Isowa Ibis and the Tanabe specialty gluer from Fremont into the new addition, all the other machinery is being re- located from the original building to the addition so as to optimize material movement. This involved a significant investment in conveyors. Lawrence Paper has also invested in digital printing with an HP Scitex 17000, which was installed about five years ago. for prototyping and production. “I wouldn’t say we’re a dig- ital house and it represents only a small percentage of our business, but it definitely helps us,” says Packard. “Though we’ve seen an increase in big box work since the purchase of the Engico in 2006, we’re still very much a brown box facility,” he says, adding that the company’s customer mix is very diverse -- fast food, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and consumer products -- which is one of the things that makes the company so strong. “We are not a three-order-a-day shop, we’re producing a lot of orders across a lot of sizes across all our equipment lines and we have plenty of diversification.” Packard says the company is nearly “maxxed out” at its Lawrence campus but investment is expected to continue, with the goal of improved efficiency. “Our goals, as they have always been, are for higher quality, higher efficiency, faster set up times and ultimately, faster response times CONTINUED ON PAGE 40 An HP Scitex 17000 digital press allows Lawrence Paper Com- pany to diversify its offerings for its many customers.
