A tremendous year in review

In 2013 the region was suc- cessful in marketing its close proximity to the Boston-Wash- ington corridor, coupled with superior interstate freeway and rail systems that move goods from the Eastern seaboard, across the United States and Canada to the Pacific North- west and visa versa, along with a lower cost of doing business and a talented pool or experi- enced and talented labor. Texas based Trammell Crow is in discussions to develop a 2.3 million s/f distribution center that would create between 800-

1,100 new jobs. Webgistix a global leader in eCommerce order fulfillment leased 108,000 s/f building in Hanover Township from Mer- icle Commercial Real Estate Services. Tech Packaging, Inc. began construction of a 223,200 s/f facility in Humboldt Industrial park, which also sawAmerican Eagle Outfitters, Inc. select it for a new 1-million s/f distribu- tion center. But the region’s growth goes well beyond logistics and dis- tribution. A variety of Business have expanded or established new

business operations, such as Sallie Mae, which plans to add 300 new jobs, GeorgiaP- rintCo Northeast and Green Spirit Farms, which cultivates vegetables and herbs in the long vacant Corning Building in Benton Twp., Lackawanna County. In addition the region has seen two pockets of mobile apps and digital content creators begin to form in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, as a result of the abundant technical and creative talent coming out of the 16 colleges and universities in the area. In November, Ron Maloney , a veteran regional economic developer who focuses on pro- active unique lead generation was hired to replace a retiring Penny Cannella . According to Penn’s Northeast Board Chairman John Cognetti , “The breadth and depth of Ron’s industry knowledge is far-reaching. Ron has worked on projects of all kinds and in multiple industry sectors and his experience in recruiting international companies is un- precedented. Penn’s Northeast and the region are fortunate to have someone who brings such a great amount of diversity to the position.” An immediate re-tooling of Penn’s Northeast commenced, along with a initiative to finally develop a cohesive multifaceted targeted industries strategy that will provide benefits for all the diverse counties, cities and economic development Real estate market on the rise in PWC PRINCEWILLIAMCOUN- TY, VA — Real estate assess- ments from Prince William County show that both residen- tial and commercial real estate values are on the rise. Preliminary analysis of as- sessments indicates that the average residential home value in Prince William County is up 7.5% and the average commer- cial property value is up 2.5% from last year. “This is great news,” said Co- rey Stewart , chairman of the Prince WilliamBoard of County Supervisors. “It shows we have a very strong economy and that we are emerging from the reces- sion far better than most.” n
