The project was selected from among16 entries submitted by 11 re- gional firms. The Scandlon Health and Wellness Center introduced a 41,000 s/f. addition of multi- purpose recreation and educa- tion space to the King’s College campus in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

The project takes advantage of a compact, sloping site by eco- nomically stacking spaces and following the land’s natural topography. The center houses a 20,000 s/f. gymnasium, an athletic training suite, health sciences classrooms, and of- fices. An outdoor teaching area brings an appealing green space to the urban location and provides a place for out- door recreation. “The Scandlon Health and Wellness Center’s aesthetic quality is ultimately about its utilitarian nature,” Biondo said. “We made a deliberate effort to impart a simple, clear, and balanced beauty that will become a timeless enhance- ment to the King’s College campus.” These honors are the most recent in a series of recogni- tions for the Spillman Farmer.
