Drainage, stormwater & transportation ... Continued from page 10C Department of Transporta- tion. Work began on December 1, 2011 and was completed in less than 20 days. The paving subcontractor, Capital Hard- scapes, installed the PaveD- rain system. Their crews used a total of 7,128 square feet of blocks, which are approxi- mately 1 square foot each. Because of the low-hanging power lines in the alley, they had to use a crane with a tele- scoping boom to lift the mats off the trucks. The parking lot measured approximately 110 by 44 feet. “The installation went very easily,” Jackson says. “When they lay the mats, the ends look like a jigsaw puzzle. They connect each block to put them together.” The PaveDrain mats were laid down by crane in just one day. The finish handwork required half a day. The PaveDrain systems at this site can store approxi- mately 42,394 gallons of runoff per rain event and 199,665 gallons per year with nothing discharging into municipal drains. The city vacuums the two sites once a month because of the number of trees in the area, Jackson says. In the winter, rubber blades are used on the snowplows to protect the blocks when snow builds up. PaveDrain has another benefit: Because their surface is warmer than asphalt, snow melts more quickly. Water infiltrates through the block system, leaving no pooling on the surface and resulting in less ice buildup. “The Pave- Drain system looks very good and the residents are happy as well,” Jackson says. “If we had the money to do PaveDrain down the entire street, I would do it.” n Management, LLC is ex- cited to present Carmike Cinema’s state- of-the-art, 12Plex “BIGD” theater com- plex to the Altoona Area. Accompanying the theater, FMB has a commitment from an international hotel group to build a four-story, 99 room, nationally recognized
