doctor, was a passionate historian and author of several books on Spring Lake. “You have to step away to realize what you have here,” Judge reflects on her time living in the Midwest. “Spring Lake is a hidden gem.” Judge’s father was a Spring Lake man, born and raised, who left only to attend medical school and serve in the Navy. He returned after this and opened his practice, operating right out of the Judge’s family home. Judge’s connection to Spring Lake runs deep. Growing up in the town, she was exposed to its unique charm and rich history. Her father instilled in her a deep appreciation for the town’s beauty and its people. CAPTURING SPRING LAKE’S BEAUTY Judge’s photography primarily focuses on the breathtaking beach sunrises of Spring Lake. Over the past four years, Judge has honed her skills and evolved her style, capturing the essence of Spring Lake in every shot. While Judge primarily uses her phone for photography, she is considering investing in a professional camera to further enhance her work. Her future goals include expanding her product line to feature other towns. She is also committed to keeping her prices affordable, ensuring that her artwork is accessible to everyone. Judge’s advice to aspiring photographers is to be fearless and open to new adventures. “Don’t be afraid to share your photos, even if you’re not a professional,” she says. “You never know what people are going to like.” Through her photography and products, Martha Judge is not only capturing the beauty of Spring Lake but also sharing her love for the town with others. Her dedication to her craft and her commitment to affordability have made her a beloved local artist. By sharing her photographs with the world, Judge hopes to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of their own surroundings. She encourages everyone to take a moment to pause and appreciate the simple things in life, such as a beautiful sunrise or a walk along the beach.

S pring Lake has long been a generation resident, this inspiration has blossomed into a thriving business, showcasing the town’s natural beauty through her photography. Judge’s journey began in 2020 when she adopted her rescue dog, Darby. Early morning walks to the beach led her to capture stunning sunrises, which she then shared with her siblings. Encouraged by their positive feedback, source of inspiration for many. For Martha Judge, a fourth-

FINANCIAL FITNESS
GIVE SMARTER, NOT HARDER With these strategies, investors can make the most of charitable giving and lighten their tax load before year-end.
AS WE APPROACH the end of the year, now is an ideal time to review changes in charitable giving laws to ensure you’re maximizing both your impact and tax benefits. Over the past few years, several vital updates have provided new opportunities for tax- savvy donors. One of the most notable changes involves enhanced tax deductions . For 2024, cash donations to public charities can now be deducted up to 60% of your adjusted gross income (AGI), while donations of noncash assets, such as appreciated stocks held for more than one year, can be deducted up to 30% of your AGI. If your contributions exceed these limits, you can carry forward the excess deductions for up to five years. Donating appreciated assets is a powerful strategy for those looking to increase the value of their giving. By gifting noncash assets instead of selling them, you can potentially avoid paying capital gains taxes, unlocking up to 20% more funds for charity. Additionally, you may deduct their fair market value, further enhancing your tax savings. Another critical update affects qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) from IRAs. If you’re over 70 1/2, you can direct up to $105,000 tax-free from your IRA to charity in 2024, lowering your taxable income while supporting a cause close to your heart. This strategy can be especially valuable for those 73 and older looking to satisfy required minimum

distributions (RMDs) without increasing their tax burden.
Donate toys or clothes: Have kids go through toys or clothes they no longer use and choose items to donate to local shelters or charities, teaching them how their generosity can directly impact others. Sponsor an animal: If your child loves animals, consider sponsoring an endangered animal
Volunteer together: Look for family-friendly volunteer opportunities at local soup kitchens, animal shelters or community cleanup events. Getting hands-on helps children understand the value of giving their time. Host a holiday bake sale: Help them organize a small bake sale in your neighborhood or at a community event, with all proceeds going to a charity of their choice.
For estate planners, charitable remainder trusts remain an effective way to support philanthropic goals while securing an income stream for heirs. These trusts offer a win-win scenario by ensuring deserving causes benefit while providing donors with tax relief and estate planning flexibility. This December, make sure your philanthropic contributions not only make a difference but also align closely with your financial goals.

A RED-NOSED RUDOLPH, a spirited sing-along of the Twelve Days of Christmas, and Silent Night sung by candlelight are just some of the charming highlights of Church of the Holy Trinity’s beloved annual Carols by Candlelight in Spring Lake. Now in its 35th year, this treasured holiday tradition returns on Saturday, December 7th, beginning at 5 p.m. For many in the area, this joyful evening marks the start of the Christmas season. Holy Trinity’s historic doors open wide to welcome carolers from all faiths and ages to sing a wide range of seasonal favorites. The evening will also feature a lively performance from All That Brass, a brass ensemble led by church organist David Citron on the tuba! “Many look forward to the annual Christmas Carols by Candlelight event as a festive beginning of the holiday season. There is no church service, just Christmas Carols and a great time is had by all,” shared Rev. Kathleen Bishop. Everyone is welcome to come and join an evening that leaves hearts full and spirits ready for the Christmas season. Holy Trinity Church, located at the corner of Monmouth and Third Avenues, is the oldest church in Spring Lake and is a proud entry on the National Register of Historic Places. Once inside, you’ll feel how the beauty of the church complements the warmth of this special evening. Holy Trinity’s Christmas Eve service on December 24th, held at 5 p.m., is also open to everyone, regardless of church background. For more details, visit holytrinityspringlake.org.

finance. Kerry, with a background in law, human rights, and mindfulness, brought her unique skills to the brand. Asked how she knew a clothing company was meant for her, she laughed, “A psychic told me! I was involved in my own startup called Mindful Mentors and asked her if I should stick with it. She told me the Faherty venture was ‘a strong current you won’t be able to swim against.’” The psychic also shared how Kerry would be able to infuse everything she loved and is passionate about into the brand. That insight began Kerry’s journey as Chief Impact Officer, guiding the brand’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Alex and Mike’s mother, Ninie, has also played a vital role as Faherty Brand’s Head Store Designer, bringing a relaxed, rustic style to each store. Together, the family has built a business that reflects their love for Spring Lake and their vision for creating sustainable and high-quality casual clothing. Home & Headquarters Spring Lake, the town that shaped their childhood, now serves as home and creative headquarters for two stores. “It’s surreal raising our kids in the same town where we grew up,” Alex reflects. “It’s helped us slow down and focus on long-term growth for the business, prioritizing family and our health.” But running a business in their hometown comes with unique pressures. “Spring Lake is our oasis, and we wanted to protect that,” says Kerry, “We’re very involved in every aspect of what we do, and there’s pride in bringing something to a place you call home. It raises the stakes. You want to make sure, even more so, it is successful.” For Alex, there’s the challenge of balancing his natural drive to solve problems with allowing himself some downtime—a process that remains a work in progress.
BUILDING THE FAHERTY LEGACY & Waves, Fashion, Family
Fortunately, their friends were their biggest supporters for a Spring Lake Faherty Brand store location. “Our friends were very convincing,” Alex explains. Kerry adds, “As the Spring Lake store was springboarded, there was even more excitement. We had no clue how successful it would be and the support we would have. It’s been wonderful.” New Horizons The stakes felt higher as they developed Sun & Wave Cafe. Kerry shares, “We’d never ventured into food. It’s a totally new world. With Sun & Waves, we were creating something we weren’t sure we were good at, but we leaned on friends and the community to help guide us.” As daunting as it was, the Fahertys’ desire to create a gathering place for locals made them feel confident they could figure it out. It was a way to give back to the community that has given them so much. For Alex, it was also a chance to use skills he’d learned working at Ragin’ Cajun in Belmar as a teen. A Family Affair Trust and respect guide the family dynamic at Faherty Brand, but that doesn’t mean it is always easy. “Trusting each other’s strengths without second-guessing is crucial,” Alex says. Kerry agrees, emphasizing that self-awareness,

T his story begins with the tale of two college essays—one about the ice cream man, the other about building a clothing brand. Meanwhile, Mike was

reflection, and corporate coaching have been essential tools. “Working on yourself is the best form of leadership training and entrepreneurship resiliency,” she notes. Ninie designed Sun and Waves and is intricately involved in the day to day. Even their children, Ava and Riggs, have found their own ways to get involved. Ava loves helping at Sun & Waves, proudly ringing up customers or putting stickers on items. Riggs, meanwhile, primarily enjoys the treats that come with visiting the family cafe, which could make for a strong start to a college essay. A Commitment to Sustainability At Faherty, sustainability is more than a trend; it’s a core value. From their first product—a swimsuit made from recycled water bottles—to ongoing commitments to low- impact materials, the brand continually seeks to minimize its environmental footprint. Inspired by Patagonia, Faherty launched their own resale platform, A Second Wave, to reduce clothing waste.
Recently, Faherty Brand earned its B-Corp certification, a testament to its commitment to
responsible, ethical practices. “As we’ve gotten bigger, we’ve gotten better at maintaining our footprint. We are constantly looking for ways to get there,” Kerry explains.
Coming Home Now living full-time in Spring Lake, Alex and Kerry are grateful for the peace their hometown brings. They are especially thankful for the chance to raise their children by the water, enjoying beach walks, polar plunges, and surf sessions. “Spring Lake has always been home. It’s the people and the places- everything being so familiar. I think we’re all genetically inclined to go back home. We knew our work schedules would continue to be insane. We wanted to wake up and go to sleep with the peace Spring Lake brings us,” Alex shares. Kerry agrees, “Our cortisol levels dropped every time we were home in Spring Lake. Transitioning here full time was one of the natural progressions in life.” For Kerry, the ocean nearby and a slower pace allows her to continue her passion as a writer. Kerry added “author” to her list of roles with her debut children’s book, Somewhere, Right Now, in 2022. The picture book is a gentle reminder that beauty is always unfolding somewhere. Currently, she’s writing a new prescriptive memoir, The Selfish Wife, set for release by Harmony Publishers in Spring 2026. In the chaos of weekly work travel schedules, the Fahertys savor Sunday dinners, where they cook and reconnect. “Sundays are often when we’re put back together again,” Alex shares. For the future, he dreams of settling deeper into Spring Lake. “I don’t see us ever leaving and that feels good. I’m not restless. I don’t feel like there is any other place we have to be. When I retire, I’m going to manage the Spring Lake store.” The Fahertys’ story is one of family, community, growth, and a shared love for the outdoors. Faherty Brand is a celebration of their life and values, and a tribute to their dreams.
