Metsä Group, Fiskars Announce New Fiber-Based Gift Packaging Espoo, Finland based Metsä Group, in coordination with Fiskars Group, announced a new fiber-based gift pack- aging. The innovative Muoto 3D inner packaging and box made of Metsä Board’s folding boxboard encases Fiskars ReNew scissors made of recycled material. Now in its demo stage, it is a sustainable, plastic-free alternative that comes in various sizes and shapes and can be tailored to a multitude of end uses. “Plastic is everywhere, and while it will continue to play a role in the future, there are countless end uses in which we can use a renewable and recyclable bioproduct in- stead of plastic,” says Tarja Heikkilä, Product Manager at Metsä Group’s innovation company, Metsä Spring. Muoto 3D fiber packaging is made of wet wood-fiber pulp from renewable and sustainably grown Finnish wood in Äänekoski, at Metsä Group’s and Valmet’s joint demo plant.

The gift packaging, designed jointly by Metsä Spring, Metsä Board and Fiskars Group, was developed at Metsä Board’s Excellence Center. “The Excellence Center in Äänekoski conducts work- shops where we can investigate, innovate and test future material and packaging solutions based on renewable fresh fiber jointly with customers,” says Iiro Numminen, Packaging Designer at Metsä Board. “Our workshop featured first-class equipment. We were able to make real packaging prototypes, in which we sought to replicate the handprint characteristic of our icon- ic scissors. The cooperation and exchange of ideas among experts from different fields was really fruitful,” says Marko Halttunen, Packaging Design Manager at Fiskars. “We believe that the future of design is sustainable and covers the entire chain from ideation to sourcing, manu- facturing, and business development. Now in the demo stage, Muoto’s production technology and raw material is an example of the new initiatives we’re working on in co- operation with sustainable partners.”
