MY FAVORITE PEOPLE CALL ME DAD

Awesome Things About Dads •

Hands down, without a doubt, being a father is the most magical, challenging, and rewarding experience of my life. When I think back and remember the moment I first held each of my kids, the feeling of pride, nervousness, accomplishment, bliss, and love is unmatchable. I became responsible for these tiny little lives, and my world was forever changed — for the better. Having the opportunity to watch my children grow, learn, and mature has been an incredible journey, and I’m just getting started. While I relish the time spent with them while they are young — witnessing their first steps, first words, first bite of cake, and first taste of something sour — I’m also excited to watch them grow into themselves, find their passions, and contribute to the world. Raising strong, independent, loving, caring, kind, genuine, reasonable, and faithful individuals is my goal, and I’m sure my children will far surpass my expectations. I cannot wait to watch them succeed in their education, friendships, relationships, and careers. I can’t wait to feel pride at their graduations, sporting events, and weddings. But for now, I’ll enjoy the hugs, the laughter, and the memories made every single day. With each milestone, new development, and growth, I’m filled with excitement and joy — this is what life is all about. Parenting my kids with my wife as my partner is a dream come true. I couldn’t ask for more. In honor of Father’s Day and as a tribute to all of the great dads out there, I thought it’d be fun to put together a list of what makes good dads great. Here we go!

If you break it, they will fix it … most of the time!

• Speaking of fixing, dads love teaching you how to fix it on your own. • Two words — Dad jokes! • They are great coaches. • They believe in you and know how to motivate you. • They will help you sneak the cookies and snacks past Mom. They’re the kings of junk food! • They are fierce protectors! • Dads are always down for nap time. • They love to share their hobbies. • They will show you how to change a tire and throw a football. • They have a toolbox full of tools for you to explore. • They know how to keep a secret. • Most of the time, dads make great listeners. • They know it all. (This one isn’t true, but it sure seems like it is!) • They will always be young at heart. • They love you unconditionally, no matter what.

Happy Father’s Day! Enjoy your day, dads!

CHECK OUT SOME OF AMERICA’S BEST ZOOS MONKEY AROUND THIS SUMMER

Summer is one of the best times of the year to travel. Kids are out of school and want to do something fun every weekend, which can be difficult to accommodate if you’ve already exhausted your local options. If you’re looking to travel, you can visit a beach, take in the sights and sounds of an amusement park, or spend some time with animals while visiting a zoo. Nearly every state in our country has a handful of zoos or aquariums, but some stand above the rest.

that maintains an authentic desert ecosystem. This is a must-visit for any animal lover in your family.

The Bronx Zoo You don’t usually think about seeing exotic animals when you visit New York City, but the Bronx Zoo is one of the best places to view animals in America. Opened in 1899, the Bronx Zoo is responsible for many of the advancements relating to animal captivity. This was one of the first zoos to ditch cages for natural environments and create an animal hospital. With over 6,000 species, there’s an animal for everyone at the Bronx Zoo. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens While the San Diego Zoo is often boasted as California’s largest and best zoo, another zoo is worth checking out. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens outside Palm Springs has entertained visitors for decades. There are events at this zoo every day, one of the most popular being the keeper connections and animal encounters, where you get up close and personal with the animals while learning more about their habitats and lifestyles. CURE YOUR ACHY BREAKY BACK your hips, extend your arms out in front of you, shift your hips backward, and hold the pose for at least 30 seconds. You should feel the stretch in your lower back. CAT-COW STRETCH This pose is a bit more dynamic than the child’s pose, but just like the child’s pose, you begin in the tabletop position. From there, round your back, just like a cat when scared. Then, allow your stomach to fall downward, arching your back. Repeat these movements slowly, holding each for at least 30 seconds each round. KNEES-TO-CHEST Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the ground. Place your hands behind your knees and draw your knees into your chest. While slowly rocking your hips from side to side, hold the pose for at least 30 seconds. You should be able to feel the stretch in your lower back.

Here are three of the best zoos you can visit in the U.S.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska, is consistently ranked as one of the top five zoos in the

world. It prides itself on hosting rare, endangered animals you can’t see elsewhere. It has the world’s largest nocturnal exhibit, and one of the major highlights is the Desert Dome, an 84,000-square-foot indoor desert

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), lower back pain affects nearly 23% of adults worldwide. Lower back pain can result from how you sleep, sit, walk, exercise, and more. If you’ve ever suffered from lower back pain, you’ll know it can be a pain in the butt — quite literally — and can leave you strapped to the couch all day. Research has proven that aerobic and strength exercises and stretching can work wonders to help relieve lower back aches and pains. Not all causes of lower back pain can be reduced with exercise, and you should always check with your doctor before performing any stretches or strenuous activities. CHILD’S POSE If you’ve ever attended a yoga class, this one was likely your favorite — it’s so relaxing that it can put you to sleep! With your body in a tabletop position with your hands directly under your shoulders and your knees under

CUT THE FINANCIAL UMBILICAL CORD HOW TO RAISE FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE ADULTS

Adulting is all about doing your own laundry, cooking, and grocery shopping. It means making informed decisions about time management, organizational skills, and understanding how to be financially responsible.

But how do you teach your teenager financial responsibility? Let’s explore five important lessons your child needs to gain financial independence!

Help them find opportunities to earn money. Before your teen can learn to properly manage their finances, they must first make their own money! If they don’t have a job, encourage them to begin the hunt. If your teen is still too young to hold a job, consider paying them for chores around the house or yardwork. Once your teen has a cash flow, you can then teach them how to separate it into spending money and cash to save. Open a bank account. If your child doesn’t have a bank account yet, it’s time to set up a checking and savings account for them. It’s a great way to provide them with financial independence while they still have access to your guidance. While credit cards can be scary to trust your learning teenager with, you should consider a prepaid credit card they can use to learn the ins and outs of how credit cards work while still having a safety net to protect their credit. Introduce them to the concept of interest. Interest can be beneficial or a disastrous hindrance, so your teen needs to understand how it works. While it can be beneficial for certain savings accounts, it can wreak havoc on credit card debt. Demonstrate interest with different real-life scenarios to show your teen how they can grow their money or rack up tons of debt.

Whether your teen has just started earning their own money or is preparing to handle finances on their own, these simple tips can help you start training a fiscally responsible adult.

PREVENT COMMON INJURIES IN EVERYDAY LIFE BEYOND BUCKLING UP

You’ve heard it before, but we want you to hear it again — safety first!

Our world is full of accidents — slips and falls, car crashes, bicycle injuries, and the pesky stubbed toe. How many times, after getting hurt, have you looked back and told yourself you wish you were more careful? While accidents are unavoidable, many can be prevented with a few proper measures. This month, in honor of National Safety Month, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind to help prevent dangerous accidents!

STEVE’S CORNER Steve Lingenbrink is the founding partner of Polaris Injury Law, formerly Lingenbrink Law and Lingenbrink Cazares Injury Lawyers.

BE ALERT Always be on the lookout and stay aware of your surroundings. Whether in your car on the way to work or walking through a parking lot, keep your head up and your eyes constantly scanning — you never know when an obstacle, vehicle, person, or animal may cross your path or create a potential hazard. WEAR THE RIGHT SHOES Wearing proper footwear is key at home, work, and out in nature. Just like you know not to hike in sandals, not wearing non-slip shoes at a restaurant job or steel-toe boots on the clock at a construction site will set you up for disaster. To avoid any potential injuries, always wear the right pair of shoes.

SAVE THE PRANKS There’s a time and a place for a joke and a good laugh, but near machinery, electronics, ledges, or sharp objects isn’t one of them. Avoid horseplay or pranking someone in an area where disaster could easily strike. Remember that someone could get hurt. WEAR PROPER PPE Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a lifesaver — if used correctly! Avoid taking shortcuts or neglecting to wear gloves, eye protection, ear protection, or skin protection when handling particular objects or equipment. The PPE is there for a reason, so be sure to use it to prevent injuries!
