PREVENT COMMON INJURIES IN EVERYDAY LIFE BEYOND BUCKLING UP

You’ve heard it before, but we want you to hear it again — safety first!

Our world is full of accidents — slips and falls, car crashes, bicycle injuries, and the pesky stubbed toe. How many times, after getting hurt, have you looked back and told yourself you wish you were more careful? While accidents are unavoidable, many can be prevented with a few proper measures. This month, in honor of National Safety Month, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind to help prevent dangerous accidents!

STEVE’S CORNER Steve Lingenbrink is the founding partner of Polaris Injury Law, formerly Lingenbrink Law and Lingenbrink Cazares Injury Lawyers.

BE ALERT Always be on the lookout and stay aware of your surroundings. Whether in your car on the way to work or walking through a parking lot, keep your head up and your eyes constantly scanning — you never know when an obstacle, vehicle, person, or animal may cross your path or create a potential hazard. WEAR THE RIGHT SHOES Wearing proper footwear is key at home, work, and out in nature. Just like you know not to hike in sandals, not wearing non-slip shoes at a restaurant job or steel-toe boots on the clock at a construction site will set you up for disaster. To avoid any potential injuries, always wear the right pair of shoes.

SAVE THE PRANKS There’s a time and a place for a joke and a good laugh, but near machinery, electronics, ledges, or sharp objects isn’t one of them. Avoid horseplay or pranking someone in an area where disaster could easily strike. Remember that someone could get hurt. WEAR PROPER PPE Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a lifesaver — if used correctly! Avoid taking shortcuts or neglecting to wear gloves, eye protection, ear protection, or skin protection when handling particular objects or equipment. The PPE is there for a reason, so be sure to use it to prevent injuries!
