It had degener ated into a rich man's orgy (vrs. 20, 21). All were to recognize that before Cod they were individually sinners, unacceptable apart from the shed blood of Christ. Yet un fortunate distinctions were made at the table where Cod should have been exalted. How sad to see how they had abused this blessed occasion for fellowship. The peo ple had become completely accus tomed to thinking about only themselves. Such sinful selfishness Page 39
the Lord's Supper when we are dedicated to remembering Him. Is this not essential? One of the dev il's tricks is to get us to forget im portant details and recall only the trivial ones. We remember base ball scores and food prices. We remember a bit of gossip about a neighbor or what a boyfriend said. Yet, we forget the essential ingre dient to a successful life and how sweet it is to walk in full fellow ship with Christ. It is through this special service of the Lord's Supper that we are encouraged to keep ever before us the central fact of Christianity; namely, our Lord's sacrifice for us.
