Identity theft and identity fraud are terms used to refer to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another person’s personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for economic gain. Some identity thieves have run up huge credit card or other debts using their victims financial information. Some have committed crimes in their victims’s names or even used their health insurance to pay for medical treatment. Identity theft is on the rise. In this activity, you will explore identity theft including how to recognize the warning signs of identity theft, how to protect against it, and how to create a recovery plan after they’ve been defrauded. For this activity you may use the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s excellent identity theft website at identitytheft.gov . Also suggested is justice.gov/criminal-fraud/ identity-theft/identity-theft-and-identity-fraud. Consider using studyblue.com to create a 7-10 flashcard quiz about identity theft to share with your class.
