College Readiness Includes Having a Drug and Alcohol Avoidance Strategy A college education is a first and very important step on your lifetime journey of building wealth and financial stability. It’s also very expensive. Don’t waste it. Sadly, many students who worked hard to get into college find their college career destroyed by drugs and alcohol. Too much partying leads to missed classes, low grades, and failed exams. Students fall behind and may have to retake a failed class or flunk out altogether leaving them with student debt but no degree. Don’t let this be you! The more you know about the alcohol and drug-related risks you’ll face in college, the better prepared you can be to avoid them. College readiness is more than academic preparedness. It includes anticipating and understanding the alcohol and drug- related risks you will face in college, and having in place a personal strategy for minimizing those risks. Your job: Select a college you are considering applying to. Go to the website and locate, read and summarize the Campus Drug and Alcohol Policy . Explore available on campus substance abuse resources and resources within the local community. Research whether the college offers substance-free housing and activities. Research the college’s reputation. Is it a party school? Create a drug and alcohol profile of your prospective college and a strategy you will pursue to avoid losing everything to drugs and alcohol when you are in college.
