A financial literacy concept you should be mindful of is that a career is a life journey which must be carefully plotted, reviewed, and adjusted throughout a lifetime. How well you navigate your career and the kind of education and training you get has a big impact on your income and ability to build wealth and financial security. In fact, you are already beginning to make decisions that will impact your personal career journey and ultimately, your ability to earn an income and build wealth. Let’s take a look at some of the key steps on that journey, some of the important decisions you will make, and explore a few resources that can help you make informed decisions. II. Decision: What Type of Career? Think! Career prep is one issue that is not going away any time soon, so no use sticking your head in the sand. The type of work you will be qualified for and whether you will earn the income you need to meet your financial goals is not a matter to be left to chance. You must put some thought into your future career. Think about it. Ponder the possibilities. Try to eke out some sense of direction. If you ponder and ponder yet still come up empty, try a few of these exercises for career inspiration: Future self projection. Imagine your best 30-year old self. Whom do you see? What is your life like? What do you do for a living? What was your college major? What are your friends like? What do they do for a living? Where do you live? Develop a vision of your very best future self, then start working toward making that vision a reality. Research colleges, careers, and future employers. Outline a strategy for how you will become your best future self. Write it down. Keep track of your progress. Copycat Career. Whom do you admire? Who has an awesome job? It could be a famous person, friend, relative, or someone who lives in your community. Make a list of these people (let’s keep it real — no superstars, no royalty), then go through the list and ask yourself “Could I do what they do? Would I like this career?” Investigate how they got where they are. Where did they go to college? What was their major? What was their first job? If you know the person, call or email them to ask about their career preparation and path, experiences, and highs and lows of their career. If it’s someone famous or relatively famous, you can probably find biographical information on the internet. The point is: These people have PRODUCT PREVIEW

already blazed the career trail! Use their professional experiences and education as a guide to help you navigate your own career path. Exploit your interests. Not everybody is lucky enough to have a career in video gaming, sports, or acting, but if you have even an inkling of an interest in something — like aviation, graphic design, computer programming, organic farming, or teaching, now is the time indulge that interest and explore the depth of your feelings . Take a class, join a club, research, volunteer, find a mentor; whatever it takes to determine if it is something you’d want to pursue as a career. Combining an interest with a profession is a winning formula for long term success and career satisfaction.
