IRS Withholding Calculator. The purpose of the W-4 is to ensure that, over the course of 26 pay periods, your income taxes will be paid off bit by bit so there are no taxes due at the end of the year. There’s no need to guess at the number of allowances you can take. April 15 is Tax Day . Every year, on or before that date, taxpayers all across America must file a Form 1040 tax return with the IRS. The form 1040 Tax Return tells the IRS how much money the employee made the prior year, and how much was withheld in income taxes.
