DEBATE, PERSUADE, INFORM Flat Tax vs. Progressive Tax
The U.S. has a “progressive income tax”. This means that wealthier people pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes. Some economists have proposed an alternative income tax, called a “flat tax”. Under a flat tax, all people would pay the same percentage of tax on their income. Opponents of the flat tax idea argue that it would not be fair to people with less income, and that it would drastically reduce government revenue, hurting the government’s ability to provide services. Proponents of the flat tax say that it would result in an economic boom, as people would have more money to spend. They also say it would be more fair, because loopholes and complex rules would be removed in favor of a simple percentage rule. Your job is to take a side in the flat tax debate. Research your argument — there are plenty of resources and expert opinions on the internet. In a one minute presentation to the class, persuade your classmates the correctness of your position. Be prepared to rebut your opponent’s arguments.
