The Power of a Good Belly Laugh
COMEDY REALLY IS THE BEST MEDICINE
like Walmart. I went straight into the small Midwestern chain store and picked out two Eddie Murphy tapes, which were cutting-edge. There were no parental advisories in those days, and they sold them to me, no questions asked. Grandpa watched me listen and laugh and asked what I was playing. “Oh, Grandpa, you don’t want to listen to this,” I said. I’ll never forget him giving me a look, saying he understood, and walking away to let me enjoy it. As a dad now, it’s a pivotal moment looking back — Grandpa trusted me, knowing the content of my tape wasn’t meant for him, but refused to stand in the way of my laughter. Humor is important in my family. When we all sit down to watch a movie or show, nine times out of 10, it’s comedy, something we all can chuckle over. It’s better than medicine and group therapy; it just can’t be replicated. No matter what the day might have brought us, we can turn on “Abbott Elementary” and “Young Sheldon” and move past it all with eye-watering laughter. Though our daughters’ comedy preferences differ, they can watch comedy and pick up on different things they are going through in their real lives. Comedy allows you to laugh about it, brush it off, and move on. I believe in the saying, “Don’t yuck my yum.” As parents, we don’t need to understand why our children find something funny. I often ask my daughters about the TikToks that crack them up, and they’ll say, “Dad, I don’t think this is something for you.” And, like my grandpa, I’ll walk away. As long as they find joy in it and it’s not at the expense of others, we should encourage it. If they will share it with you, find out what makes them laugh and join along. As we celebrate Global Belly Laugh Day, let’s remember the power of humor to bring us together, lighten our hearts, and help us navigate the ups and downs of life. Laughter isn’t just about funny jokes or silly shows; it’s a way to cope, connect, and change our mindset in the face of challenges. Laughter makes us feel good, and it also teaches us lessons. So, let’s keep laughing and finding joy in the little things, and remember that a good belly laugh might be the best medicine for whatever life throws our way. -Dr. Jason Schermer
As long as I can remember, humor has been a big part of my life. To this day, I could be driving to work listening to a comic on the radio and just find myself cracking up, and it can change my day for the better. Laughter doesn’t just make us feel good; it can improve our mood, relieve stress, help us get through traumatic situations, and bring us together. Jan. 24 is Global Belly Laugh Day, and it’s the perfect time to throw on a funny comedy special, family-friendly silly movie, or just laugh out loud with a loved one. Whether you’re into sketch comedy, stand-up, or dad jokes, the beauty of humor is that there is something out there to make everyone laugh. Some of my earliest memories of comedy were listening to Bill Cosby records (way before any controversies) with my grandpa, brothers, and cousins. We’d listen to those records repeatedly and just die laughing together. There were classics like Bob Newhart, and on Sunday evenings, we’d listen to Dr. Demento’s parody songs on the radio. Demento naturally progressed into a love for Weird Al Yankovic, and I discovered sketch comedy like “Monty Python” soon after that. Buying my first comedy tape as a middle schooler was like a special rite of passage. I was staying with my grandparents that summer, and at a time that pre-dated streaming services, CDs, and even the popularity of big-box stores

HOW TO EASE YOUR CHILD’S DENTAL VISIT Laugh Your Way to a Bright Smile
The key to a healthy, bright smile is staying on top of your dental health habits like brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist. But for children, a smile can do even more — it’s a way to ensure a happy, stress-free trip to the dentist. February is Children’s Dental Health Month, and as parents and caregivers, you can make going to the dentist a positive experience for your little ones so they feel inspired and supported to care for their teeth. LAUGH IT OUT To help your child feel more comfortable, try setting a lighthearted mood before entering the dentist’s office. You can listen to comedy on the car ride over or pop on something fun like “SpongeBob SquarePants” or other age- appropriate social media videos before you have to leave. If you get them laughing before they arrive, it makes the entire experience smoother. STAY POSITIVE No one enjoys cavities, but they happen. It’s essential to keep things positive and support your child during their visit. It’s easy to fall into the trap of saying, “I told you so,” or focusing on what they could have done better. But that
can often lead to negative emotions, stress, and feelings of guilt. Negative connotations to dental issues like cavities, which are a normal part of growing up, instill anxiety about dental visits. REWARD AND CELEBRATE Just like it helps to set the stage for a good experience, it’s important to celebrate and reward the wins at the dentist. After their appointment, let them know you are proud they took this excellent step to care for their teeth. Reward them with a small treat, like a sugar-free ice cream or a brand-new book. Laughing and celebrating dentist visits will encourage your child to keep up with their dental care and ensure they aren’t anxious when there’s a follow-up appointment. Helping our little ones laugh, relax, and receive positive reinforcement about their dental care inspires them to keep up their health routines. Here at the office, we’re here to make it as stress-free and as happy as possible for you and everyone in your family, creating a place where smiles come easily and lasting health begins.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING “The team behind Exceptional Smiles are exceptional themselves! The receptionists are kind and offered water at the start of the appointment and a free lip balm at the end. My hygienist’s name was Lauren and she was amazing! My gums were sensitive, but she was as gentle as could be and took her time to ensure I wasn’t in pain. I felt all my questions were answered in depth, and they made me feel at ease. All in all, I couldn’t recommend them more, 10/10!” -Wynter H. — “My first visit was very pleasant. The staff was very welcoming and polite. The dentist made me feel like I could trust him since I have a fear of going to the dentist. The place has a clean and calm look. And I loved my welcome bag. Another five stars for that alone. I have confidence I chose the best dentist.” -Victoria A.

BRUSH UP ON GUM HEALTH PREVENTION TIPS FROM YOUR DENTAL TEAM
When it comes to gum health, preventive steps like brushing and flossing are essential for a healthy, confident smile. February is National Gum Disease Awareness Month, and it’s a perfect time to brush up on the importance of periodontal care. As dentists, we are here to help you stop gum disease before it starts with regular maintenance and home care. Healthy gums don’t just support your teeth; they keep your smile bright and enhance your overall health.
One of the most important things you can do to care for your gums is to brush and floss daily. Flossing helps reach plaque and food that gets stuck beyond where your toothbrush can reach. Brush your teeth at least twice daily, especially after meals, and remember to scrub your tongue. An electric toothbrush can help reduce gingivitis and plaque even better than a manual brush. It’s also crucial to go to your dentist regularly for professional cleanings so you can notice any signs of gum problems. If you are experiencing any symptoms of gum issues, like redness, swelling, or bleeding, we’ll discuss your options in a nonjudgmental way. Our goal is prevention, not confrontation. If gum disease has already started to develop, we will address it together and set you on the right course of action. In certain cases, we will refer you to a trusted periodontist (gum specialist) who can provide advanced care. Our go-to periodontist is a phenomenal clinician who has an incredible ability to put patients at ease. Though you may be dealing with a serious gum situation, he is amazing at taking your mind off the procedure and going above and beyond to ensure you are comfortable. With simple steps like regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits, you can keep your gums healthy and your smile bright. Remember, we are your allies in dental health, here to ensure you stay healthy and feel supported every visit. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

GRAIN GAINS
HIGH-PROTEIN GRAINS THAT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR DIET
If you’re trying to build muscle or improve your overall health, you already know how vital ample protein is to your diet. Most people turn to lean meats, eggs, nuts, seeds, and even dairy to add protein to their diet, but many don’t consider grains a great protein source. However, a few excellent high-protein grains can provide the same benefits as other protein sources while supplying us with more fiber and other essential nutrients. Any grain with more than 4 grams of protein per cup is considered high-protein. You can find most high-protein grains at any supermarket, but you should head to the closest Whole Foods for the best selection. If you’re unsure where to start, here are three high-protein grains you can easily incorporate into your diet. OATS You likely already have oats in your pantry. This all-purpose grain is gluten-free and packs 6 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber per cup. You can add oats to breads, desserts, and various breakfast dishes. QUINOA This high-protein grain has grown in popularity significantly in recent years, and for good reason. One cup of cooked quinoa adds 8 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber to your diet. Most people use it as a substitute for rice in soups and salads, but its uses go far beyond that. Some might even enjoy it as a hot cereal to replace sugary breakfast options.
SORGHUM If you haven’t heard of sorghum, get ready because it’s taking the country by storm. Sorghum is a staple in many Indian and African dishes. A cup of cooked sorghum will have around 7 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, and all the B vitamins, iron, and magnesium you need to improve your overall health. Other high-protein grains worth investigating include millet, buckwheat, wild rice, and teff. Once you discover the power and magic of high-protein grains, you’ll wonder why you didn’t explore them sooner.
