HOW TO EASE YOUR CHILD’S DENTAL VISIT Laugh Your Way to a Bright Smile
The key to a healthy, bright smile is staying on top of your dental health habits like brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist. But for children, a smile can do even more — it’s a way to ensure a happy, stress-free trip to the dentist. February is Children’s Dental Health Month, and as parents and caregivers, you can make going to the dentist a positive experience for your little ones so they feel inspired and supported to care for their teeth. LAUGH IT OUT To help your child feel more comfortable, try setting a lighthearted mood before entering the dentist’s office. You can listen to comedy on the car ride over or pop on something fun like “SpongeBob SquarePants” or other age- appropriate social media videos before you have to leave. If you get them laughing before they arrive, it makes the entire experience smoother. STAY POSITIVE No one enjoys cavities, but they happen. It’s essential to keep things positive and support your child during their visit. It’s easy to fall into the trap of saying, “I told you so,” or focusing on what they could have done better. But that
can often lead to negative emotions, stress, and feelings of guilt. Negative connotations to dental issues like cavities, which are a normal part of growing up, instill anxiety about dental visits. REWARD AND CELEBRATE Just like it helps to set the stage for a good experience, it’s important to celebrate and reward the wins at the dentist. After their appointment, let them know you are proud they took this excellent step to care for their teeth. Reward them with a small treat, like a sugar-free ice cream or a brand-new book. Laughing and celebrating dentist visits will encourage your child to keep up with their dental care and ensure they aren’t anxious when there’s a follow-up appointment. Helping our little ones laugh, relax, and receive positive reinforcement about their dental care inspires them to keep up their health routines. Here at the office, we’re here to make it as stress-free and as happy as possible for you and everyone in your family, creating a place where smiles come easily and lasting health begins.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING “The team behind Exceptional Smiles are exceptional themselves! The receptionists are kind and offered water at the start of the appointment and a free lip balm at the end. My hygienist’s name was Lauren and she was amazing! My gums were sensitive, but she was as gentle as could be and took her time to ensure I wasn’t in pain. I felt all my questions were answered in depth, and they made me feel at ease. All in all, I couldn’t recommend them more, 10/10!” -Wynter H. — “My first visit was very pleasant. The staff was very welcoming and polite. The dentist made me feel like I could trust him since I have a fear of going to the dentist. The place has a clean and calm look. And I loved my welcome bag. Another five stars for that alone. I have confidence I chose the best dentist.” -Victoria A.
