ALUMNI RECONNECT
WHEN AN OPPORTUNITY COMES YOUR WAY, JUST SAY YES!
We catch up with Wong Guan Min, SP alumni, to find out more about her scholarship journey, life after SP and how she deals with moments of uncertainty and doubt. A Course Medal, Asia Fund Space Prize and IMDA Gold Medal recipient, since graduating, she has added the PSC Scholarship (2019) and getting nto NTU’s University Scholars’ Programme under her belt. Congrats on being awarded the PSC Scholarship! Was this something you had always planned to pursue? Not really. To be honest, I had always wanted to follow in my mum's footsteps to pursue ‘A’ Levels in JC and was disappointed when my ‘O’ Level results did not allow me to apply to the JC of my choice. After much thought, I decided on the Diploma in Media & Communications course at SP, and little did I know then that this would turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I applied for the PSC Scholarship not knowing much about it for fear of missing out or FOMO! It was only later that I came to understand what being a public servant was all about. I was also conflicted between the benefits that the private sector oered vs having to serve a four year bond in the public sector. What changed your mind? After much thought and advice from my mentors, I realised that perhaps I would be a good fit for the public service due to my extensive volunteering and interest in serving Singaporeans. Also, when I saw the eorts my lecturers and mentors put into preparing resources for me, I knew I couldn’t take their eorts and care for granted.
WONG GUAN MIN DIPLOMA IN MEDIA & COMMUNICATION CLASS OF 2018/2019
How did you decide on your choice of undergraduate study? I’m currently pursuing a Degree in Business with a Marketing specialisation. I felt that Marketing would complement my communications background plus allow me to learn something new. This is an area I feel I can actively contribute to in the public sector. How has life changed after being awarded the scholarship? I am now a lot more confident about experimenting and trying out new things, such as theatre! Just like in SP where I had four CCAs, I have joined four CCAs at NTU too! Most of all however, I am very grateful for the group of friends I met and became close to during the PSC preparatory course. What advice do you have for scholarship hopefuls? Manage your time wisely. In SP, I was active in Leo Club, ACERS, Student Exchange Club and Ultimate Frisbee. I enjoyed all of them and they kept me going but I realised the importance of prioritising and planning so that my academics were not aected.
And take every opportunity that comes your way as they do not always come by easily!
