Midas Pattern Company Ltd has been selected to receive the first ever King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development – recognition that the company’s commitment to Carbon Net Zero is at the heart of everything undertaken at this world-class design, engineering and manufacturing facility in Bedford. Midas has been recognised for its highly respected #MidasGreenInitiative, which has seen the company make significant investments to become Carbon Neutral in just 18 months. The 115-strong British-based workforce supplies international medical and scientific device companies that are producing life-enhancing and life-saving equipment. As a sector-leading supplier specialising in low volume production moulding, with renowned expertise in product evolution and working to very strict standards, Midas has also shown that a world-class advanced production facility can achieve carbon neutrality. The #MidasGreenInitiative The #MidasGreenInitiative was instigated on 18 April 2019 and, by June 2020, the company had become ‘Process Carbon Neutral’: no mean feat for a precision polyurethane moulding company. In January 2021, Midas formed a long-term business partnership with The Forest of Marston Vale – a charity managing a community woodland site in Bedfordshire – and thus became ‘Carbon Net Zero’. Two months later, Midas was audited by The Carbon Trust and accredited ‘Carbon Net Zero – PAS 2060 Scope 1,2 & 3’. This was followed, in August 2021, with accreditation to ISO 14001:2015 by NQA Certification Ltd, with a further successful audit to ‘Carbon Net Zero – PAS 2060 Scope 1,2 & 3’ in March 2022. The journey involved a complete investigation of all aspects of life and work at the production facility in Bedford and significant financial investments, but

the results are outstanding and have contributed to job satisfaction, motivation, profitability and long-term growth. This has led to improved working facilities, energy and waste distribution cost savings, a reduction of and subsequent cost savings in raw material use, increased sustainability as a business, and ultimately an increased order book. More information on the #MidasGreenInitiative can be found at www.midaspattern.co.uk/green- initiative. Technical expertise Midas is known in its sector for technical expertise and attention to detail for high quality, ground- breaking custom polyurethane RIM mouldings, which are ideal for high value products such as medical devices, scientific equipment and complex electronics housings. The company is now gaining respect and appreciation for a genuine commitment to its environmental responsibilities. Everything made and shipped from Midas is Net Zero and going the ‘extra mile’; Midas also takes care of the customer’s carbon mitigation on each job. Managing Director, Alan Rance Prof MICME, sums up the mood: “We are so proud to receive the esteemed King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development. We have highlighted that whatever size your organisation is, you can achieve carbon neutrality in a short timeframe if you honour the main principles of environmental awareness and take ownership of your responsibility to make amends for your carbon-intensive past. “We recognised early on during the #MidasGreenInitiative the difference between carbon reduction and environmentalism, and we committed to make carbon neutrality a genuine goal that underpins everything we do at Midas. It is also important to inform about how this aids competitive advantage to encourage others to embark on their own green journey.”
