What made Tenscare apply for a King’s Award?
How did you find the application process?
The change in March 2017 to becoming an employee-owned company saw a shift in purpose, focusing on the improvement of quality-of-life for our customers. This upshift in the motivation and dedication of our team was reflected by the rapid growth of the company from 2019 to 2021. TensCare applied for the King’s Award as recognition of all the hard work from all its members but also as to recognise our customers and suppliers for making large investments in TensCare products. What research did you do about the Awards/ application process? We spoke with other King’s Award winners about the process and got a good understanding of the eligible criteria for achieving the award. The website is also very easy to follow and understand.
The process itself was quite straightforward but did require thoughtful consideration to ensure we were able to tell our story (and our purpose), as well as highlight the success we have achieved within our international trading community.
Did you learn anything about your own company during the process?
Company Background
Established in 1997, TensCare is an internationally recognised Health & Beauty Electrotherapy manufacturer and distributor based in Epsom, Surrey. Over the past 30 years, the company has expanded its product range from a single labour maternity pregnancy device and a single pain relief device, to multiple devices within the pain relief, maternity, pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation, post surgery/injury muscle recovery and beauty categories. In March 2017, TensCare became an employee- owned company, starting a new journey for all those connected with the firm. Embarking on this new venture brought a lot of excitement to the team, not to mention an empowerment of freedom and opportunity to grow and develop the company further.
Yes, the process itself was an opportunity to reflect upon achievements which - because of the dynamic environment we operate in - aren’t always recognised. At the time, our Finance Director, Charlotte Smith, said: “It was in some ways a process of recognition and gratitude for the work of both our colleagues and our business partners.”
What planning did you do beforehand?
Applying for the Award required a significant amount of time, resources, commitment, and leadership from our organisation. We found it useful talking to previous winners.
