When CEO Dr Ali Al-Memar and Chairman Dr Oliver Foster founded Ascot Rehabilitation Ltd in 2012, it was with a view to establishing a true centre of excellence. The goal was not only to provide high quality, consultant-led rehabilitation and trans-disciplinary care for patients suffering from neurological conditions, it was also to blaze a trail for a new way of doing things. The founders felt that too many hospitals were setting patients’ recovery goals around their own systems and routines, rather than tailoring them to each individual. This meant rehab sessions were neither long enough nor frequent enough to get results. At Ascot Rehab, by contrast, our approach was to focus on goal-driven rehabilitation. In most cases, that meant maximising the patient’s independence and quality of life by developing personalised programmes using state-of-the-art equipment. Assigning a specialist team to each patient, we provided longer treatment sessions up to six days a week, often leading to tangible results in three months rather than the usual six. Successful outcomes for our patients quickly led to success for Ascot Rehab as a company. In just a few years, as the founders had hoped, we were widely acknowledged as a centre of excellence in the treatment of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, stroke and other neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
From the Queen’s Award to the King’s Award From its founding in 2012, Ascot Rehab developed a growing reputation for excellence, which soon drew patients from abroad. Our International Business Director Maha Ali credits the dedication and professionalism of our staff for the fact that increasing numbers of patients began travelling from the Middle East, Europe and elsewhere to benefit from our treatments. Having guided hundreds of patients to a full recovery, we found that word of mouth recommendations quickly spread in their home countries. Media and coverage and exhibiting at international business events spread the word ever further. In 2017, this success led to Ascot Rehab winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, recognising outstanding achievements by British businesses, in our case in the field of international trade. The Queen’s Award brought even more attention to our way of working, and its undoubted success for our patients, both national and international. Global challenges Of course, the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020-22 was a major challenge, from having to make our clinics Covid-secure to negotiating supply chain issues. Nevertheless, Ascot Rehab’s reputation for excellence enabled us to weather the storm. In particular, we have benefited from longstanding relationships with a number of international
embassies, governments and service providers who trust our service. We have also worked hard to ensure our treatments remain up-to-date and at the leading edge of international standards, equipment and techniques, from robot-assisted walking to the use of fibre optic technology to help patients recover their swallowing. It is a tribute to the hard work of all our consultants and therapists that Ascot Rehab has now been recognised in the very first King’s Award for Enterprise. The ascent of a new monarch makes us all aware of our place in history. At Ascot Rehab, we are proud to have played a part in the transformation of international medical care in the second Elizabethan era, and to continue to do so under King Charles III.
