Family-owned home fragrance company, Sebnini, is honoured to have won the King’s Award for International Trade 2023. Established in 2001, the luxury candle and diffuser specialist is a major player in the multi- billion-pound global market. The Surrey-based company’s spectacular export growth of more than 500% in the past three years has earned the team a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise. As a leading private label business, Sebnini’s products appear under different brand names in many of the biggest retail names in the UK and around the world. Co-founders and husband-and- wife team Gert and Carina Schyberg originally started selling candles from their one-bedroom flat in South West London in the late 1980s. Now supplying customers all over the world, it’s all very different from the company’s humble beginnings after Gert and Carina moved to the UK from their native Denmark. After years spent growing the business, expanding the range and gaining attention from national retailers, the Sebnini brand was officially established in 2001. With family at the heart of the business, the name came from a combination of the names of son Sebastian, known as Seb, and daughter Selina, who used to call herself Nini. Managing Director Gert says: “The most important thing for me is that it is recognition for SebniniTrading Ltd

all our staff. They have worked so hard to make the business a success and we couldn’t have achieved this without their endeavours and expertise. It’s a real tribute to them.” The company base is now on farmland in Smallfield, Surrey, a couple of miles from Gatwick Airport. Around 20 staff, from sales to a dedicated in-house design team, work in the office, right next to the factory which opened five years ago. Employing up to 60, it uses state-of-the-art machinery to automatically fill diffusers that make up around 40% of the business. Supplying the UK, Europe and the US, Sebnini’s comprehensive strategy of increasing overseas sales has paid dividends with the 500% export boost, which resulted in the recognition by the King’s Awards.
