by Dr. Albert J. Lindsey, Pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Tacoma, Washington PART II Promise of Resurrection ■ s h o u l d be clearly understood that Christ promised period of a thousand years, the first resurrection, or the resurrection of the dead in Christ, being placed at the beginning of the millennium and the second resurrec tion following at its close.

to raise His hearers in the last days conditioned by be en the Son. “And this is the will of him that sent , that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth him, may have everlasting life: and I w ill raise him at the last day” (John 6:40). Furthermore, their resur- :tion is represented as an . act of grace extended to :m by Christ as we are told in John 5:21, “ For as the ther raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even the Son quickeneth whom he will.” Also in John 6: , “ No man can come to me, except the Father which th sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the ¡t day.” Also in John 6:54, “Whoso eateth my flesh, id drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will ise him up at the last day.” We have already observed that St. Paul’s teaching stinctly follows this same line, “ But if the Spirit of m that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he at raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken ur mortal bodies by (through or because of) his Spirit at dwelleth in you” (Rom. 8:11), which of course nits this divine operation to those in whom the Holy >irit dwells. A fuller statement of this fact is set forth I Corinthians 15:44-46, “ It is sown a natural body; is raised a spiritual body. There is a «atural body, and ere is a spiritual body. And so it is written, The first an Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was ade a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first lich is spiritual, but that which is natural; and after- ird that which is spiritual.” The body here spoken of spiritual, that is a fit organ for the spirit, which is a ascription which cannot possibly refer to any but the ived. In this regard it is significant ♦hat during the first tree centuries, belief in a millennial reign of Christ on irth was generally accepted in the church, and such a iew is again gaining rapidly in the thought and life Fthe present-day church. It is the contention of many :holars that these two resurrections are separated by a

To make clear this fact and to prove that the partici pants of the first resurrection are those who have enjoyed the new birth or the spiritual resurrection, let us con sider a parallel between these two resurrections. This will not only help in understanding the first resurrection, i.e. “ the dead in Christ,” but the second resurrection or “ the rest of the dead” which we shall be considering shortly.
