“ In body and brain he is simply a made-over ape, with no fundamental distinctions at all . . .” Dr. William Howells of Harvard. Of course we need not stop here. If the theory of evolution is true there was a time when our ancestors were fish. Dr. William Etkin of the College of the City of New York said, “We are but made over fish, and, al though the job of alteration is a good one, the original design of a house that has been remodeled.” It is a long, long way from a micro scopic protozoan animal to a human being, but scientists believe that when there was no inhabitant of the earth higher than a protozoan, evolution had already progressed more than half way from its beginning to its culmination in man. The article mentioned does without subtilty what a number of college textbooks are doing in a somewhat subtile way—persuading readers who have no background in this field that they already believe in evolution, even though they are not aware of it. We are told that even those who be lieve that Adam and Eve were his torical personages cannot avoid a be lief in evolution, for these parents of the human race could not have mani fested all the traits now found in man. By this reasoning, if you will admit that two people cannot normally be blond, brunet, and red headed, all three, you are an evolutionist in spite of yourself. This is a part of the new modern ism. The Christian public is being in doctrinated with the notion that the idea of evolution is not so bad after all, for any kind of change is evolu tion. But the Christian will not be de ceived if he keeps clearly in mind that his salvation is based upon his ac ceptance of the vicarious sacrifice of Christ in atonement for his sins and that the necessity of this redemption was occasioned by a fall which was a historical event. The theory of evolu tion is incompatible with the plan of redemption.

An article in a recent issue of a Christian magazine states that a con siderable number of fundamentalists still think that evolution means that man came from the ape. This is in tended to be another way of saying that many fundamentalists are unin formed as to what evolution really is. There is nothing new about this charge. Belief on the part of a layman that according to the evolution theory men came from apes has long been considered a sign of ignorance, while to say it means that men came from monkeys shows an even greater amount of ignorance. This situation seems to have grown from the infer ence that the average man is referring to living species of apes, since he is not familiar with fossil fragments, while the experts do not derive man from any of the living primates. But in spite of this charge, the fact is that the majority of evolutionists do believe that man evolved from apes. There are a few scientists who believe that we are more closely re lated to monkeys than to apes and de rive us from them directly instead of through the apes. There is even one scientist who published the opinion, based on the study of one abnormal embryo of a tree shrew, that monkeys evolved from men. Professor William Straus of the Johns Hopkins Universi ty sums up the situation thus: “ In its present orthodox form this theory as sumes that man has evolved from an animal that would be classified as an anthropoid ape.” As a sample of the views of evolutionists we may present the following. “ That man has descended from an ape-like stock no reasonable person can doubt.” Dr. George Parker of Har vard. . . man at first, so far as his gen eral appearance and ‘build’ are con cerned, was merely an ape with an overgrown brain.” Dr. G. Elliot Smith of Oxford. “ He made himself from an ape and created human culture . . .” Dr. Er nest Hooton of Harvard.

PTL representatives have been working in these five countries, continuing the ministry begun by such heroes of the faith — the evangelization of the people of Western Europe. This fall and winter the Pocket Testament League will embark on an expanded evangelization and Gospel distribution campaign in this vital area. 250,000 more Gospels and Testaments have been printed for distribution in Germany; 100,000 for France; 40,000 for Italy; 25,000 for Hol land and 10,000 for Switzerland. It is estimated that at least a million Gospels will be needed as the campaign progresses. Pray that funds to purchase these large quantities of Scriptures may be provided in time to meet this pressing need. Write for free copy of the PTL Quarterly.
