SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS Now in its 30th year, the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) in Karachi, Pakistan and its alumni network are growing in size and stature. Tim Banerjee Dhoul takes a look at the institution’s research emphasis and programme options

HISTORY The Institute of Business Management

(IoBM) began life as the College of Business Management (CBM) in 1995, ahead of the establishment of IoBM by charter in 1998. In the same year, the school awarded its first MBA and BBA degrees, before launching an MPhil programme in 1999. Today, IoBM is made up of four colleges: the College of Economics and Social Development, the College of Computer Science and Information Systems and the College of Engineering Sciences, as well as CBM. COURSES IoBM’s CBM offers a wide range of programmes at both postgraduate and undergraduate level. Its MBA is designed to be completed in two years, with evening or weekend formats both available. At the time of their enrolment, students can also opt for one of several specialisations, including health and hospital management or environmental and energy management. The master’s in management programme, meanwhile, can be completed in anywhere between 18 months and four years, with a research emphasis designed to offer participants a pathway to careers in academia, as well those in industry and consultancy.

LOCATION IoBM has a purpose-built campus spread over 11 acres in Korangi Creek, Karachi, with a further nine-acre site acquired just one kilometre away. In 2017, it also added the Shahjehan S Karim Centre of Excellence, a newly constructed facility that encompasses a media studio, library and cafeteria. With a population of more than 20 million, Karachi is one of the world’s largest cities. The capital of the province of Sindh is also Pakistan’s leading industrial and financial centre and considered to be its most cosmopolitan city.
