Why is change so hard?

WHAT IS SELF-CONTROL?

Anyone who has ever tried to introduce a new exercise routine or a new healthy eating, or drinking habit knows this too well. Dieters typically put back on 107% of the weight they lose. Changing is hard. Falling back to our old ways of being is much much easier. And changing the way we think, the way we interact with others, the way we communicate – these things are hard-wired into our DNA. Well the great news is, that we can change the way we think. So often we focus on the ‘should’ or ‘ought’ space – I really should go for a run this morning, even though it might rain. I ought to put this in the worm farm, but it’s only one potato peeling. No surprises what happens to these shoulds and oughts. The trick? Move from ‘should’ to ‘want’. Unless you want to do something, unless it is really important to you in your gut, then it will never be a priority. So remember, you may have a goal you care about (be it to stretch yourself, follow a passion, address a shortcoming or build a skill) but if you don’t feel it in your gut, and you’re not convinced it will make much of a difference, then you simply won’t act it.

Making conscious choices. It is our ability to consciously choose our emotions, our thoughts, what we focus on and what we do, in the presence of temptation.
