STEPPING UP WHEN SOMETHING ISN'T QUITE RIGHT .
Firstly, we know it can be scary to step into the fire when you know something isn't quite right or someone is not 100% happy. Often our intuition is telling us that something feels wrong, yet we often don't really listen to that little voice that tells us to be courageous. To walk towards the challenges and the problems, not away from them. Why? Because we're human.
AS HUMANS, WE ALL HAVE SIX VERY PREDICTABLE IMPULSES:
1
2
3
To give up without trying.
To settle for the status quo.
To avoid responsibility or conflict.
4
5
6
To shun a challenge.
To do the bare minimum, & finally,
To avoid action.
And we do these instinctively. It takes less than 3 seconds for us to feel threatened and for those six impulses to take over...
UNLESS YOU PAUSE, THINK & RESET
1 . PAUSE - Breathe. Take the time to notice and name your feelings. 2 . THINK - Take a moment to reflect. Ask yourself WHY am I avoiding this situation? What is really going on for me here? 3 . RESET - Recognising what our real concerns are gives our brains a chance to relax and reset the impulse. Now you can move forward and a great first step is an open-ended question to the other person or people.
