It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat. Social scientist, Dr Brene Brown, who has devoted her career to understanding human connection, believes that, more than anything, it is about being vulnerable enough to show up and let ourselves be seen, that is the key to true connection. Her study of human connection with over 1,280 individual interviews, found one clear truth: Connection is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives. We live our lives with the ever-present fear of disconnection; the fear that something we’ve done or failed to do, something about who we are or where we come from, has made us unlovable, and unworthy of connection or belonging. We resolve this fear by understanding our vulnerabilities and cultivating empathy and compassion. It is in our self-understanding that we find the courage to dare greatly enough to be the real deal. It’s not about winning or losing. To be the real deal.
