Think of the most powerful memories. The ones that sit with you. These are the stories of your life. And they are made of moments. Memorable moments. A manager who spots a talent you didn’t know you had. A chance encounter with the future love of your life. A holiday conversation that changes your goals. Moments shape our lives and our guests’ lives - but what if, instead of waiting for them, we created them?
Carl Rogers called this sort of love, ‘unconditional positive regard’. Being loved simply for who you are. This love is an unselfish feeling but it is also extraordinarily rare. What most of us experience, how most of us learn about love, is through conditional positive regard. Most people, like 99.9% of us, want to see ourselves as making a positive difference in someone else’s life. We want to know that someone would truly miss us, were we no longer here. And that we would leave a ‘me shaped gap’ in other’s lives, that would always be there. Humans love to be loved by other humans. We want to be seen and accepted for being who we are and to be valued for exactly who we are.

Ever notice that we feel the most comfortable when things are certain. But the most alive, when they’re not? To create really powerful Heartist Moments we must stretch ourselves out of our comfort zones to try things that might fail. Stretching ourselves, although a little scary, will deliver the greatest feeling of shared pride when we learn, prevail and eventually nail a truly memorable Heartist Moment that is far from the expected or the ordinary. And if you’ve been creating the same Moments for a while, maybe it’s time to stretch even further.
