The UN’s Room XIX, Geneva, Switzerland Interior: PEIA ASSOCIATI Photos: Studio PEIA, Giovanna Silva

The Palais des Nations, built in neoclassical style in 1936, was repeatedly extended over the decades. The largest hall, financed by Qatar, is the new Room XIX with 800 seats. Due to its stylized, wafer-thin, wood-fabric- composite ceiling and wall panels with sophisticated acoustics and superb multimedia equipment, this new space is quite a highlight. The redesign of the seating pays tribute to famous designers like Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, who worked on construction projects for the UN.

The lounge areas overlooking the plenary chamber are furnished with the classic four-leg Contas table range (design: wiege, Fritz Frenkler, Anette Ponholzer) and the light, transparently covered Aline sled-base chairs (design: Andreas Störiko).
