THE LIFELINES OF GREELEY ENDODONTICS How Roxanne and Ciera Put Patients First and Keep Me in Line

Roxanne

As families plot out a good spot to set up the RV, set up the yard games, and load up their grills in hopes of creating an epic and memorable Labor Day celebration, they might forget that what this holiday offers is much more than a day out of the office. It provides the perfect opportunity for company owners, managers, and bosses all over the world to take some time and show their employees genuine appreciation for all the hours they spend ensuring the business runs smoothly. Because I know Greeley Endodontics would either cease to exist or struggle endlessly without the efforts of our two employees, Roxanne and Ciera, I wanted to recognize and honor them today! Since Roxanne is usually the first person patients meet, it only makes sense to start with her. Serving as our front office manager for over 2 years now, Roxanne has been a huge asset to our office. When a patient first calls to set up an appointment, Roxanne works with them to discuss insurance information and what the cost will be. Roxanne understands that patients feel far more at ease when she extends the courtesy of providing all the information she can prior to the procedure. Roxanne will also walk patients through the procedure on the phone after she gets them on my schedule for a root canal. In many cases, patients call us because they are hurting, so it’s important to have someone as caring, compassionate, and understanding

as Roxanne. Additionally, for a great number of patients, root canals are the root of all fears and are synonymous with pain and anxiety. Of course, we aim to ensure that the real procedure is a lot less painful, both mentally and physically. But we can only do so because Roxanne has helped assuage patients’ fears beforehand. After Roxanne has greeted patients when they come in for their appointment, Ciera takes over. While her official title is Back Office Coordinator, I refer to her as my righthand person, even though she is left- handed. She takes patients to the dental chairs and gathers as much information as she can about their tooth. She takes X-rays and 3D CBCT scans all while getting to know the patient and answering as many of their questions as she can. She then gives me all that information, so I can create a treatment plan to suit each individual patient best. After the procedure is complete, she cleans all my instruments, gets the chair ready for the next patient, and repeats the cycle all over again. In all honesty, I’m not sure I could come up with the words to explain how grateful I am for all Ciera does for our office. She is my lifeline. With an office made up of only three people, we know we don’t have the luxury of relying on other employees to come in and finish the tasks we didn’t get to. We work together and openly communicate to make sure that every single thing gets done every single day. While

our successful team dynamic stems in large part from our honesty and dedication

Ciera

to helping each other, I firmly believe the primary reason is

our shared mission of creating a friendly and effective healing environment for patients. I know Roxanne and Ciera often put themselves in our patients’ shoes, hoping to find a way to make the experience more comforting, and it’s those efforts that remind me how vital they both are. I’m so fortunate to have these two phenomenal employees to put patients first, keep me in line, and help our office function as seamlessly as possible. Without them, Greeley Endodontics wouldn’t be the business it is, and I can’t thank them enough for all their efforts.

Happy Labor Day, Roxanne and Ciera! You ladies are amazing!

Anger is a common emotion. It’s natural, and it’s a part of how you respond to certain circumstances in your environment. It’s how you express extreme displeasure. However, new research suggests chronic anger can be detrimental to your health. Essentially, it comes down to this: If you are stressed, tense, easily irritable, angry, and “snippy” all the time, you may be doing serious harm to your well-being. Studies have already shown a link between anger and the heart. People who showed signs of feeling anger on a regular basis experienced higher rates of heart disease. The first studies on the impact of anger came out in the 1950s and have since been confirmed: Chronic anger physically harms the heart. Why? When you get angry or upset, your brain triggers the release of specific hormones, including cortisol and norepinephrine. These hormones are responsible for triggering the “fight or flight” response. When these hormones enter the bloodstream, your heart rate increases and arteries constrict. This helps to more effectively pump blood to the arms and legs for a fight or a flight. The problem is that when a person is constantly angry or upset, these hormones course through the body more frequently, stressing the arteries and internal organs. As a person ages, this stress can become more damaging. CHRONIC ANGER, YOUR HEART, AND YOUR HEALTH How This Emotion Is Doing You Harm

One study that appeared in the Psychology and Aging Journal looked into this phenomenon. Researchers found that there is a link between frequently experiencing anger and increased inflammation and chronic illness for people ages 80 and older. This equated to more instances of heart disease and dementia. The study also looked at other emotions, including sadness, which has also been linked to heart disease and other inflammatory diseases. Through a number of tests involving 200 participants ages 59–93, the researchers concluded anger was far more detrimental to a person’s health than sadness. Ultimately, if you regularly experience rage and frustration, properly dealing with your anger is one of the best things you can do for your health. Every person’s situation is different, and it comes down to getting to the bottom of what makes you angry so you can work through it, whether you work through it alone or with a mental health professional. Take the steps to prioritize your mental and physical health, and your efforts will pay off tenfold in the long run.

LOOKING FOR WEEKEND ACTIVITIES THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK? Here Are Some Kid-Friendly Ideas to Get You Started!

September can be a strange time of year for parents. Many families just returned from their last vacation of the summer, so they are stuck trying to find fun outdoor activities that allow them to soak up the last few weekends of warm weather without totally breaking the bank. Splashing around in water parks and perusing aquariums make for fun experiences, but daily passes can add up quickly, especially if you’re wanting to take the whole family. Don’t let that discourage you, though! There are plenty of fun and inexpensive ways to spend your weekend in the sunshine. Here are a few to keep in mind! BALLOON BONANZA The next time you’re at the grocery store, swing by the kids’ aisle and grab a couple bags of water balloons. Then once that glorious weekend sunshine starts to peak over the mountains, grab your swimsuits and the garden hose and get to filling. You can pick teams for an all-out competition

or play a nerve-wracking game of catch. No matter how long it takes to pop the hundreds of balloons, don’t forget to take a few timeouts and reapply some sunscreen!

DON’T FORGET THAT SIDEWALK CHALK

While you’re shopping for water balloons, be sure to add a box of colorful chalk to your cart. Even if you don’t have ample concrete or sidewalk space at your house, you can always take the kids downtown where they can show off their creations to local passersby. SUNSET MISSION Hop on your phone or computer and start researching idyllic new spots to catch an epic Colorado sunset. If you have small children, Glenmere Park and Bittersweet Park might be good places to start. You could pack some snacks, blankets, and even hot chocolate in a thermos to ensure you have the perfect setup to watch the

sun make its beautiful descent behind the clouds and trees. If your kids are a little older and up for a bigger adventure, you can journey an hour outside of Greeley to watch the sunset from some great hiking trails, such as Devil’s Backbone or Carter Lake Reservoir. If you’re a novice hiker and have any questions about preparation or planning, be sure to give Dr. Lowry a call here at the office! He’d be happy to offer up both trail knowledge and encouragement!

THE NATURAL WORLD HAS SOME CRAZY TEETH! What ‘Shark Week’ Can Teach You About Dentistry If you’re like the team here at Greeley Endodontics, then you spent a fair number of hours camped in front of your television last month watching perhaps the most epic Discovery Channel program known to mankind: “Shark Week.” Since we spend the vast majority of our workdays looking at people’s teeth, it might not surprise you that one of our favorite aspects of sharks is their teeth! Since they lose at least one tooth per week, sharks’ teeth are positioned in rows so that when one falls out, it can quickly be replaced by another located behind it. While sharks’ adaptive dental tendencies might be the most well- known in the animal kingdom, they certainly aren’t the only creature with interesting chompers. Here are some awesome dental fun facts animals might be hiding from us!

SQUIRRELS While it might be scary to think about, squirrels, rabbits, and other rodents’ teeth never stop growing. Since they are constantly using their teeth as tools to break down hard foods like bark and nuts, their teeth continue to grow to keep up with the daily wear and tear. SNAILS These small animals might have the strangest teeth of them all! According to scientific research, the teeth of an aquatic snail are the strongest-known biological material on the planet! They’re even stronger than titanium. What’s even more unbelievable is that the garden snails you find in your backyard have more teeth than any other animal — over 14,000 — and they can all be located on the snail’s tongue! While all these animals have experienced particularly intriguing dental adaptations to maintain their sparkly whites, one of the greatest aspects of their natural approach to teeth care is their lack of cavities. Because they don’t ingest as much sugar and chew on hard surfaces, they have far fewer teeth problems than humans! All of us here at Greeley Endodontics want you to keep your mouth as cavity-free as the animals do! If you want some advice about your dental hygiene or to talk about the latest “Shark Week” episode, come on down to the office! We’re happy to help! TOMATO SALAD WITH HORSERADISH

DOLPHINS Similar to the rings on trees, you can detect circular indentations on dolphins’ teeth to tell how old they are. Unlike sharks, dolphins’ teeth are permanent. Interestingly though, they don’t use them to chew their food. Since they don’t have any muscles in their jaw, they swallow their food whole.

The Strange History of ‘Happy Birthday’ HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO WHO? Is your calendar full of birthday parties this month? You’re not alone. In the United States, more people are born in September than in any other month, meaning Americans will sing many choruses of “Happy Birthday” this month. This popular tune has a surprisingly controversial history. First composed by sisters Mildred and Patty Hill in 1893, the familiar melody originally belonged to a song called “Good Morning to All,” a song the sisters sang to their students every morning. Over time, the word “birthday” entered variations of the song and became a popular party tune. By the 1930s, “Happy Birthday” appeared all over in films and on the radio, prompting Mildred and Patty’s sister, Jessica, to secure the copyright to “Happy Birthday” due to its similarity to “Good Morning to All.” In 1988, Warner Music acquired the copyright, and the song’s ingrained popularity ensured a profit. They reportedly made $2 million a year on royalty charges. The Walt Disney Company paid $5,000 to use the song in a parade, and many documentaries were also impacted by the copyright. The civil rights documentary “Eyes on the Prize” never made it to DVD because the royalties charge on a scene of Martin Luther King celebrating his birthday was so high.

Due to its age and popularity, many people have insisted “Happy Birthday” is, or at least should be, in the public domain. When Warner Music tried to charge filmmaker Jennifer

Nelson royalties to make a film about the song, she filed a lawsuit. Her attorneys uncovered a 1922 songbook featuring “Happy Birthday” without any copyright notice. They even suggested Warner Music knowingly hid the songbook because it proved “Happy Birthday” had been in the public domain for decades. In 2015, a U.S. judge ruled that “Happy Birthday” is not under copyright. So, the next time you record guests singing “Happy Birthday” at a birthday party, you don’t have to worry about paying royalties if you upload it online.
