Packing Tips
Pack an essentials box, including: • Basic tools: flashlights, pocket knife, hammer, screwdrivers, nails, masking tape, tape measure, and light bulbs • Bathroom items: hand towel, soap, toilet paper, shampoo, and shower curtain • Kitchen items: Paper towels, coffeemaker, filters, paper plates and cups, plastic utensils, dish detergent, sponge, pet foods, dishes, and trash bags Make packing easier with these simple techniques: • Use the proper packing materials. Purchase sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and specialty boxes at local moving or shipping companies. Less costly alternatives include boxes from wholesale companies or grocery stores and padding boxes with newspaper, pillows, and blankets. • Pack one room at a time. Label each box (on top and side) with the room it belongs in and a description of its contents. Mark boxes containing breakable or sentimental items as "Fragile." Create a detailed list of items packed in each box and make unpacking them easy. • Empty all drawers of breakable or spillable items. Avoid damage by removing all furniture knobs, feet, screws, etc., and storing them in one container so the parts won't get lost. • Do not pack flammable goods or heat-sensitive items. Transport candles, records, audio and video tapes, computer disks, propane tanks, aerosol cans, oil-based paints, and certain cleaning fluids separately. • Wrap items individually . Place a layer of crushed paper on the bottom of the box for cushioning. Fill empty spaces with additional crushed paper. • Pack boxes firmly. Place heavier items on the bottom and lighter ones on top. • Pack according to the season. If you’re storing seasonal items, box them separately and mark them accordingly. • Put heavy items in small boxes. Make them easier to carry. • Make sure the items you’ll need first are loaded last when packing the truck. You’ll make the things you need more accessible. • Move on a weekday. Banks, utilities, and government offices will be open if you need them. • Pack room-by-room. Keep similar items together. • Reinforce the bottom of boxes. Use at least one strip of packing tape.
