Moving Checklist
ONE week before moving _________Transfer or close checking and savings accounts. Arrange for a cashier’s check or money order to pay the moving company upon arrival in your new community. _________Have automobile serviced for trip. _________ Fill out Post Office change of address forms and give them to the postmaster, or submit your change of address online. _________Check and make an inventory of all furniture for dents and scratches; notify the moving company of your inventory and compare on the final day. _________Dispose of all combustibles and spray cans (spray cans may explode or burn). _________Pack a separate carton of cleaning utensils and tools (screwdrivers, hammer, etc). _________Separate cartons and luggage you need for personal/family travel. _________Label all packed boxes with the room where they will be going in your new home. _________Organize at least one room in the house for packers and movers to work freely. _________Cancel all newspapers, garden/lawn service, etc. _________Review the entire list to make certain that you haven’t overlooked anything. _________Check and double-check everything you have done before it’s too late. MOVING DAY _________Plan to spend the entire day at the house. Last-minute decisions are up to you. Don’t plan on leaving until after the movers have gone. _________Hire a baby-sitter or send the children to friends/family for the day. _________Stay with the moving van driver to oversee inventory. _________Tell the packer and/or driver about fragile or precious items. _________ Make a final check of the entire house, basement, closets, shelves, attic, and garage. _________Approve and sign the Bill of Lading. If possible, accompany the drive to weigh station. _________Double check with the driver to make certain moving company records show the correct delivery address for your new house. Verify the scheduled delivery date. _________Give the driver your contact phone numbers in case of a problem. _________Get complete routing information from the driver and phone numbers so you can call the driver or company while en route in case of emergency. _________Disconnect all utilities and advise the real estate agent who sold your house. _________Lock all the doors and windows. Advise your real estate agent and neighbors that the house is empty.
