The counties office reported 87 per cent support for the idea from all the partici- pants at three public information meetings held in January. “We are impressed with the public’s par- ticipation at the preliminary consultations,” said Warden Jean-Paul St-Pierre in a news release. “We hope for much the same pas- sion and interest at the next two consulta- tions.” Last month the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) organized public information sessions in Rockland, Embrun, and L’Orignal. More than 100 residents, both interested individuals and representatives for community arts and culture groups, at- tended. Next month the counties will set up pub- lic meetings in Hawkesbury and Casselman to present ideas and gather suggestions and feedback on the setup and mandate for

a regional arts council. The March 4 meet- ing is at Le Chenail Cultural Centre while the March 6 event is at the Casselview Golf Club. Both meetings are at 6:30 p.m. During the initial round of meetings, counties officials affirmed that the UCPR would provide support funding in the 2014
budget for a regional arts council. Contin- ued funding for the program would be re- assessed at the start of 2015. Other sources of support funding for the initial year of operation include the federal government and the Prescott-Russell Community Devel- opment Corporation. “The wheels are in motion to begin op- erations in April,” stated Anne Grenier, UCRP project officer. “As the organizers we now hope to bring together candidates and cre- ate a strong board of directors, one that ex- hibits a wide range of skills and experiences and that will be motivated to promote cul- ture in every corner of Prescott and Russell in both official languages. A membership recruitment campaign, in- cluding sale of membership cards, will be- gin the first week of March, leading up to the founding meeting for the regional arts council March 27, 6:30 p.m., at the Cham- plain Motel Restaurant in Plantagenet. The meeting agenda includes election of the inaugural board of directors.
