How Two Boys From Ohio Changed the World
It’s been a long year. The Stuckey family has been through some ups and downs, and I’m grateful to be approaching the holiday season. I’m really looking forward to spending some quality time with the family. These days, families can be spread out all over the world. Most of my own family is out of state, so unfortunately, I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like to. However, our eldest son, Matt, and his wife, Anne, will be flying in from Atlanta for Christmas this year! Melody and I are so excited to have them this year. Taking a flight during the holidays can drain the holly-jolly spirit right out of you, so we tend to forget what a miracle air travel truly is. Recently, I was thinking about how that modern miracle was made possible by the tireless work of two boys from Ohio. On Dec. 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first flight in a self-propelled, engine- powered aircraft near the small town of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Orville piloted this 12-second flight when the aircraft flew 120 feet before coming back to the ground. Orville and Wilbur traded off as they tested their first airplane, making three more flights that day. Wilbur, who piloted the last test, kept the plane in the air for 59 seconds and covered 852 feet. The Wright brothers spent the following years discreetly perfecting their aircraft. Their secrecy allowed them to obtain the patents and
contracts they needed to improve their aircrafts and continue testing. A couple years after their first flight, they designed a plane that stayed in air for 39 minutes and maneuvered more easily. Then, in 1908, they made their first public flight in France. Having grown up in the Dayton area, where Orville Wright himself was born, I’ve always been fascinated by the history of the Wright brothers. The accomplishments of these two brothers opened up an entirely new way of traveling. Not only did they prove that air travel was possible but also that planes could be the most efficient way to travel over long distances. Through their efforts, traveling around the world became even more feasible. “The accomplishments of these two brothers opened up an entirely new way of traveling.” The Wright brothers’ miraculous achievements changed the world, though what we’ve done with that achievement is less than thrilling. Is there any place more uncomfortable than the middle seat on an airplane? Sometimes it’s unavoidable, so if you’re planning to take
advantage of the Wright brothers’ legacy this holiday season, I have some tips to help make the ride a little less painful. Thousands of people flock to airports all around the globe this time of year. Planning for this busy time and making proper adjustments are crucial to ensure the crowds don’t hinder your travel. Make sure to arrive early and keep an eye out for any updates to your flight. If you’re planning to travel with children or you’re a senior flyer, it’s important to make the airline aware of any special accommodations you may need, like wheelchair assistance or car seat installation. If your kids have never flown before, talk to them about what to expect during the trip. This will help them visualize what’s ahead of them, and, rather than be uncomfortable or anxious, they will be excited and eager for the adventure. Today, people rely on airplanes to explore new cultures and countries and to bring them home to their families. At one point, moving hundreds of miles from home meant never seeing your family again. Now, we only have to decide which airline to use and purchase tickets in time for the holidays.

What’s in a name?
We all know reindeer visit our rooftops every Christmas Eve, but what brings them there? Follow the unique and complicated history of Santa’s reindeer to find out.
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, and Cupid were all brought to life by Moore, but have you ever heard of Dunder and Blixem? Though we now know the duo as Donner and Blitzen, Moore originally named them Dunder and Blixem — the Dutch words for thunder and lightning — but publishing companies wanted names that would rhyme better with the rest of the poem. Still, it was a few decades before Donner and Blitzen made their appearances in the version of the poem we know today.

In the 1820s, Clement Clarke Moore penned a holiday poem that became the foundation for a phenomenon still alive today. Commonly known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” “A Visit From St. Nicholas” is a beloved story shared by every generation. It is in this poem that reindeer were first credited with powering Santa’s sleigh around the globe. Many popular songs, movies, and plays have preserved Moore’s vision of St. Nick, and his reindeer and their names are no exception. (Well, kind of.) Rudolph wouldn’t join the squad until a department store added him as part of their promotions in the 1930s.
who were longtime reindeer herders, made their passage from Norway to the U.S. with a herd of reindeer to invigorate the Alaskan landscape and help their native neighbors. Lomen saw the reindeer as an opportunity and partnered with the Macy’s department store company to create a promotional Christmas parade in which Santa, led by his reindeer, a sleigh, and Sami herders, were prominently featured. Lomen’s goal was to promote his massive reindeer conglomerate for the production and sale of reindeer meat. Instead, a holiday story was born.

How Workplace Drama Created Dentistry
Despite having a huge impact on your overall health, dentistry is uniquely separate from the rest of medicine. Your dentist never checks your blood pressure, and your family doctor won’t know what to do if you have gingivitis. The story of how this happened is filled with poor timing and petty office drama. In the early 1800s, there was no formal training to practice dentistry. Anyone who could pull a tooth could set up shop and call themselves a dentist. Around this time, a Baltimore surgeon named Dr. Chapin Harris developed an interest in the field. The more he learned about dentistry, the more Harris realized it was connected to medicine. He went to the physicians at the University of Maryland (U of M) and suggested adding a dental program to the medical school. The physicians responded by telling Harris, “The subject of dentistry is of little consequence.” Have you heard about Kids’ Day? This curt response became known as the Historic Rebuff. Why were the physicians at the University of Maryland so dismissive to dentistry? It wasn’t because they didn’t care about teeth. Dr. Harris had unwittingly made his proposal during a huge struggle amongst the U of M faculty. The board of trustees had recently taken power away from the faculty and started appointing their own people. One of these people was Dr. Henry Willis Baxley.
Baxley was a professor of anatomy at U of M with an interest in dentistry. Baxley supported Harris’ proposal, but, unfortunately for Harris, Baxley had also been appointed the chief of anatomy by the trustees. The rest of the faculty saw Baxley as a traitor, so the physicians were probably so quick to rebuff Harris’ proposal because of Baxley’s support. Far from deterred, Harris, Baxley, and many other dentists in Maryland banded together and established the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1840. This was the first dental school in the United States, and it quickly became the epicenter of the American dental movement. The American Society of Dental Surgeons and the American Journal of Dental Science were established soon afterward, further cementing dentistry as a unique field.
Through one act of spite, the Historic Rebuff, dentistry emerged as we know it today as a separate entity from the rest of medicine.
