A Note From Pastor Rick

Dear Church Family,

I am excited about all the opportunities this month to experience the abundant life we have in Christ! To put into action what we've learned through our “Prayer, Care, Share” series, we are having a Friend Day on Sunday, April 6th. I look forward to my friend joining us, and I hope you will bring a friend to church for this special occasion as well. I am also eagerly anticipating our Easter celebration on April 20th. This is another wonderful opportunity to invite friends and family members to join us in worship for one of our three worship services. In the days leading up to Easter, we will hold Good Friday services to prepare our hearts for all that God wants to do in us and through us this Easter season. On April 27th, we'll kick off a brand-new sermon series called "The Blessed Life." In this series, we will explore the Beatitudes found in the Sermon on the Mount. Here, we will discover what it means to truly live a joyful and blessed life in Christ.

Let us continue to live out our vision as a church to make and multiply disciples of Jesus.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Rick

How Christians Should Respond to Today’s Culture

Hello church family!

In February's edition I shared the following two statistics on the evangelism crisis in the church today. 1."Only 1% of pastors say their churches are very effective at evangelism." "72% of Americans describe themselves as spiritually open, with younger generations more open to God since the pandemic." 2. After much prayer and processing over the last two months, I'd like to highlight five points on how Christians should respond to today's culture. In a world that often feels divided, chaotic, and ever- changing, Christians are called to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16). But how should believers respond to today’s culture, one that is increasingly secular, morally complex, and often hostile to biblical truth. The answer is not retreat or compromise, but rather faithful engagement, living out our faith with grace, truth, and love. 1. Stand Firm in Biblical Truth: Today’s culture is marked by shifting moral standards and subjective truth. However, God’s word remains unchanging. Christians must be rooted in Scripture, not swayed by cultural trends or popular opinion. • Know the Word: Regular study of the Bible helps believers discern truth. • Live by Conviction: Our actions should reflect God’s standards, even when it’s countercultural. • Speak the Truth in Love: Boldness does not mean harshness. We must communicate truth with humility and compassion (Ephesians 4:15). 2. Engage Culture Without Compromise: Jesus didn’t isolate Himself from culture, He entered it and remained sinless. Likewise, Christians should be present in the world, influencing culture rather than being influenced by it (Romans 12:2). • Be Involved: Engage in culture, politics, media, and education to represent Christ, not your opinion. • Be Discerning: Not everything in culture is bad; identify what can be redeemed and used for God’s glory. • Be a Light: Those around you watch how you live and how you interact on social media platforms. Live in a way that points people to Jesus, showing that Christianity is not just a belief system, but a transformed life. 3. Love and Serve Others: Culture is often marked by division, but Christians should be known for their love (John 13:35). • Show Compassion: Instead of reacting with hostility, extend grace to those who disagree with us. • Meet Needs: Serve your neighbors, the marginalized, care for the poor, and be a voice for the voiceless. • Build Relationships: Genuine friendships with non-believers create opportunities for meaningful conversations about faith.

(Continued on the next page)

(Continued from the previous page)

4. Be People of Prayer: Cultural battles are ultimately spiritual battles. Prayer is essential in responding wisely to the world around us. • Pray for Wisdom: Ask God for guidance in engaging culture with truth and love. • Pray for Leaders: Whether we agree with them or not, Scripture commands us to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2). • Pray for Revival: The answer to cultural decay is a movement of God in people’s hearts.

5. Trust in God’s Sovereignty It’s easy to feel discouraged by the moral decline in society, but God is in control. History shows that He works even in the darkest times. Our job is to remain faithful, knowing that the gospel always has and always will have the power to transform lives.

As Christians, we are not called to retreat or blend in with the culture but to engage it with unwavering faith, bold truth, and love. By standing firm in Scripture, participating in culture without compromise, serving others, praying, and trusting in God’s plan, we can make a lasting impact in today’s world. In the end, our mission is clear: not to win culture wars, but to win souls for Christ.

In Christ Alone,

Pastor Eric

A Note From Pastor Brian

I always say this, and it is true. I love to be part of a church that serves the community. Various ministries exemplify this mission, including the Stowe Center team and the H.O.P.E. Ministry Team.

The Stowe Mission operates as a vital extension of our local churches, having ministered on Parsons Avenue for many years. One of their key community services involves hosting luncheons for local residents. Our team from Violet proudly serves a hot lunch to these individuals on the second Friday of every other month. The meal we prepare consists of Hawaiian meatballs, mixed vegetables, and rice and w can’t forget the PUDDING. It takes a dedicated team to make this event successful. Recently, we provided 288 meals on our serving day. If you're interested in joining the prep or serving team, please reach out to us, and we’ll get you involved. The H.O.P.E. ministry began as a vision from one of our members, aimed at supplying food to students in local Pickerington schools who might lack access to meals over the weekends. For over 13 years, our church has been committed to this essential service for those in need. The team collaborates with school counselors, who inform us of the number of students requiring food bags. Currently, we are distributing an average of 176 bags of food for each weekend. Each bag includes two breakfasts, two lunches, and two dinner meals, along with snacks. If you wish to support this ministry, feel free to join us on Friday mornings during the school year to help pack the bags, and then assist with delivering them to the schools. Women of Faith and Sisterhood of Grace, 2 VioletGroups here at Violet, combined efforts in March to collect donations of baby and maternity supplies and equipment for the Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) at Stowe Mission. It was fun to have the Baby Shower at the Pickerington Donatos! Director of the PRC, Elese Mahan, was our honored guest and speaker. She expressed her thanks for the abundant generosity of these women. To follow up, the women each took a Baby Bottle Bank for donations of coins, bills, checks, and even credit cards to help finance this life-saving ministry of Southern Baptists. The bottles will be turned in on Mother's Day. A field trip for the two groups to tour the PRC will occur the 3rd week of May. You can sign up for the PRC's monthly newsletter at: prayer@stoweprc.org

Want to know more about

Our NEXT STEPS Gathering & Lunch is for everyone, whether you want to make an initial connection with Christ and His Church, reconnect, or strengthen a connection you’ve had for years. NEXT STEPS is an interactive gathering that will help each attendee personalize their growth pathway. It serves as a great introduction for anyone who is new to the Violet family. However, it also offers resources that can help anyone grow in their walk with Christ and spread God’s love in our community and world.

This session is offered May 18th at 12:30 PM. The lunch provides a casual opportunity to meet some of Violet's pastors and ask any questions you might have.

To help us be faithful stewards of church resources as we make arrangements for food, we request that you register by the Wednesday before the gathering. Late registrations and walk-ins are always welcome.

Hello spring! Hello ladies!

Today it’s sunny and 70 degrees, and the 2025 Violet Women’s Retreat at The Berlin Resort is still one week away. I’m praying and hopeful that by the time you read this, the Lord will have moved in a mighty way in the hearts and lives of the 62 women attending the retreat. I’m also praying and hopeful that you will join us for some or all of the many other opportunities we have coming up throughout 2025 to gather together in His name! I’m also hoping it’s sunny and 70 degrees when you read this! This year, we are anchoring ourselves to these words in scripture: “No, dear brothers and sisters, not that I have achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” Philippians 3:13-14

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in the works for this year:

We are excited about getting to know the ladies in the Violet Youth Ministry a lot better; they are the next generation! We have fun ideas and events planned to encourage them, love them, pray for them, and make meaningful and lasting connections! We have a fun luncheon planned on June 21st! Do you love to cook and/or craft? There will be opportunities to spend time together creating special dishes to share with our loved ones and hanging out together for a few crafting afternoons! We have a special night of cooking and crafting on September 21st! Are you ready to get out and start walking outdoors again? How does meeting together at our local metro parks for an afternoon walk sound? This is such an easy and great way to get to know each other better while we’re walking, talking, and praying through the spring, summer, and fall!

An Operation Christmas Child shoebox drive and packing party is being planned for November, and our annual Christmas Luncheon is in the books for December 14th!

We’re finalizing a calendar of events and plan to have that ready in the May Violet Connection.

I’m praying these upcoming opportunities to gather together will help us grow in our faith together and develop our spiritual gifts. As we apply God’s word to our lives in a practical way by serving together, praying, encouraging, and pressing on, we will experience that sweet transformation that comes when we’re making an impact for the Kingdom! If you have any interest in helping with cooking, crafts, organizing walks in the park, decorating, sending cards, and letters…we need you! Please feel free to call or text me anytime to get involved!

On Tuesday, March 4th, thirty of our Violet members gathered for a special night of prayer and worship led by David Brown and Mark Painter of our prayer team. Our time consisted of singing familiar worship music, as well as praying through the ACTS model of prayer.

This model of prayer is a structured approach to corporate prayer gatherings using this acronym (ACTS), which stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication.

Here are definitions of each element:

A - Adoration: This involves praising God for who He is and what He has done, focusing on His greatness and goodness.

C - Confession: This is a time to acknowledge your sins and ask for forgiveness, expressing sorrow for your shortcomings and seeking God's cleansing.

T - Thanksgiving: Express gratitude for God's blessings and provision, acknowledging His love and care.

S - Supplication: This involves asking God for your needs and the needs of others, seeking His guidance, wisdom, and provision.

Our goal in our corporate prayer is that our church and community responds to the Good News of Jesus Christ and are transformed by the Word of God. Our prayer team gathers each Tuesday in the VioletCafé from 6-7 PM.

Our next afternoon of prayer and worship is on Sunday, July 7th, at 12:30 PM after the second worship service. We hope to see you there.

Prayer Ministry

“Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; Prayer is the greater work.” Oswald Chambers

Community prayer like other types of prayer, frees God to empower us and build our faith. However, in addition, community prayer strengthens the bonds between us as believers, allows us to see where God is working in bigger ways, builds us up in prayer and makes better prayer warriors. My friend, Steve Hopkins, and I have taken Prayer Boot Camps to many prisons throughout Ohio. One of our goals is to teach the men to pray better. One truth that we always teach is that if you want to learn to pray better get with those who pray better and pray with them. Then, watch and see how God works in you and others. Twenty-five years ago, Marion State Prison was not a prison that you wanted to visit, or certainly did not want to be a prisoner there. It had one of the highest prison murder rates in the state and various rival gangs ruled in the prison. A female warden was hired to try to straighten out the prison and she was a Christian. She began allowing Christian groups to come into the prison and present Christ to the prisoners. There were only a few conversions at first and the number of believers began to grow. The inmates began sharing their faith with each other and more converts were the result. Still only a very small percentage of the prison population had become Christians, but they began to pray that God would begin to reign in the hearts of more prisoners. At first, it was just two or three men praying in their cells, reading the Bible together, discussing what they had read and praying that God would begin to have control in their prison. Then, God did something truly amazing. Jack (not his real name) and his entire gang were arrested, tried, convicted and sent to Marion. Jack's gang was notorious for selling drugs, theft, and suspected of murder. As a leader, Jack was very demanding yet treated his crew with respect and they were extremely loyal. Very quickly, Jack and his gang began taking over large blocks of the prison. One of the Christian groups that the warden allowed to come to the prison arranged to be able to keep the prisoners who wanted to participate from late morning until dinner time without any breaks for counts, searches or interference from the guards. If the inmates agreed to listen to the presentations throughout the day, they would receive a gourmet meal at lunch. Having eaten prison food for a while, Jack was one of the first takers for the free gourmet meal program. Jack had always felt there was a big hole in his life and tried to fill it with drugs, money and sex and still he felt this emptiness that he could just not fill. As I understand it, Jack had many questions the day of the lunch and, as they were answered by the visiting Christian staff, he began to realize that it was a relationship with a loving God who had already paid the price for his sin and risen from the dead to secure his eternal future. Jack asked Christ to forgive him of his sin and be the master of his life. The warden heard of Jack's conversion, and, to her amazement, Jack asked to see her. When she asked him why he wanted to see her, Jack asked if he could have a private meeting with his old gang because he wanted to share Christ with them. This was a highly unusual request, to say the least, and potentially dangerous, if things went sideways. The warden had seen how much change had taken place in Jack's life after he was saved and decided it was a risk worth taking and set up a private room where the 12 young men could meet. On the day of the meeting, Jack explained to his entire crew the giant hole that he had felt in his life and how nothing that he had tried or done even began to fill it until he met the Christ of the Bible. By the time that Jack left the room that day, he had led 10 of his 11 former gang members to the Lord. The hold out, his second in command who had hardened his heart, thought he could be in charge when they got out of prison. (Continued on next page)

(Continued from the previous page) The news, testimony and changed lives of the gang spread through the prison like wildfire. The gospel was spreading in the prison like butter on warm bread. The prayers of the believing inmates and the various Christian groups that had been serving them had not fallen on deaf ears. God was answering in miraculous fashion. In 2019, Marion State Prison was considered one of the safest prisons in the state with an estimated Christian population of nearly 50%. All because God's people both inside and outside of the prison got together in groups of 3 - 5 and asked God for God-sized change. For the last year and a half, God has put congregational prayer on my heart. Like most efforts, progress was slow at the beginning with two or three people. Now, our prayer groups of as many as 15 gather and pray on Tuesday evenings. Even with this small group of prayer warriors, we see many of the ministries of the church growing from small groups to children's ministries. Recently, we have had seventh graders and teens starting Bible studies at their schools before classes begin. We have seen church growth and health improving as God moves. It is still early in our ministry, and we could use your presence on Tuesdays and your prayer support so that we can see God move in answer to our prayers. Here is what I can promise: 1. A somewhat unconventional prayer meeting with just Scripture and prayer 2. When you come regularly, you will begin to pray differently and more effectively than ever before 3. We will see growth in our church and its ministries 4. We will see God moving in our local communities 5. Missionaries will be prayed for and supported in broader ways 6. Our local governments, state government, and national governments will be prayed for 7. Our pastors, deacons, church staff and congregation will be lifted in prayer

This is what you can expect when you come: That you pray along with us

Pray silently with us if you do not want to pray aloud Pray aloud as the Spirit leads you if you do pray aloud You may submit requests to the group – typically supplication requests will be prayed for after Adoration, Confession, and Thanksgiving You will become a better and more effective prayer warrior There will be a short Bible reading at first then prayer – prayer is our focus

Please consider coming and adding your voice to ours. God promises and releases great power when the congregation prays together. Come help us and see what God is doing.

Respectfully, Mark Painter Chairman of the Deacons

P.S. If you are a senior (50 and over), please consider Joy in the Morning. It is prayer and fellowship time for seniors every 3rd Saturday of the month. This month we will be meeting on April 12th, instead. It is a very similar format; except we have doughnuts and a social time afterwards. Seniors often feel they age out for many ministries but we (since I am well into that group) are frequently the most experienced prayer warriors: So, come out and be a part of watching God make things happen.

A Life-Changing Opportunity With Joni & Friends!

The Overflow High School Group has done many impactful mission trips over the years. We have served in South Dakota, New York, Chicago, Costa Rica, and Honduras. This summer, we are staying close to home! Our high school students and leaders will be volunteering at the Joni and Friends Family Retreat in Berlin, Ohio from July 13-18. Our volunteers will be paired with a child with a disability to help them have an amazing camp experience. While entire families come to Family Retreat, having a “Buddy” helping with their loved one with a disability (and with their “typically developing” siblings) provides a welcome break for each family. While the Overflow High School group is anchoring this mission opportunity, the door is open for any adults in our church who feel led to come and serve at Family Retreat. You can find more information and register under “Events” at violetbaptistchirch.org. Also, feel free to reach out to me at keithh@violetchurch.org with any questions.

Thanks, Pastor Keith

Their amazing donuts are $2.75 each, $12.50 for a half dozen, or $22 per dozen.

We will be back to church at 8:15 PM.

Do you have friends who like donuts? What kind of friend would keep quiet about an opportunity to get Amy's donuts? Don’t be that person!

Crossings Camp in Kentucky offers one of the best Youth Summer Camp experiences in the Midwest. Each day students will choose activities including swimming, zip-lining, basketball, fishing, the “blob,” team challenges, volleyball, soccer, line dancing, dodgeball, crafts, great worship, and teaching. These are just a few of the things that our students can expect to experience at Crossings Camp!

Registration is open but limited to 55 spots. After these spots are filled, we will be placed on a waiting list for additional spots as other churches release them.

We are looking for a few parents who might be interested in coming to camp to invest in our students.

During the month of March, VioletKids learned that we are meant to really know God! As we studied the life of Abraham, we learned that we can trust in God, we can talk to God, we can listen to God, and we can walk with God. Our March scripture memory verse says, “A person’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

We had another VioletKids fun event for March: Mother/Son Bowling at Rule3! In February we had a special event for fathers and their daughters, so this month it was time for the moms and their boys to have a turn! This was a fun night of fellowship and good competition. Oh, and we can’t forget the amazing pizza, too!

Did you know that during the months that have a 5th Sunday, we make that special Sunday an opportunity for our VioletKids to serve others in our church and community? In September we wrote letters that went in the HOPE food bags that are delivered to PLSD schools. In December we created artwork that was delivered to the residents at StoryPoint Retirement Community in Pickerington. This month we assembled goodie bags for Pickerington teachers for Teacher Appreciation month in the spring!

I am excited to share that our children’s ministry is growing and adding new kids to our classrooms regularly! If you have a heart for babies, littles, or school-aged kiddos, there is a place for you on the children’s ministry team. Through our weekly Bible stories and classroom activities, it is our heart that the kids who come through the doors of our church would feel welcomed, loved, accepted, and that they belong here! When you choose to invest in a child’s life, you are choosing to partner with God in His Kingdom work. If we are willing to help these kids to feel welcomed and loved and accepted, then we are paving the way for them to freely come to their own relationship with Jesus! Our children’s ministry verse is 1 Timothy 4:12, which says, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.” We want VioletKids to know that they are “never too young” to have a relationship with Jesus and live out their faith! If this news excites you in any way, or you are feeling led to join the church in this mission, I would love to connect with you and see how you could be a part of this team. We really are better together! You can reach me by email at chelseap@violetchurch.com.

Events & Volunteers On March 14th, a small but mighty crew cooked, transported, and then served food at Stowe Mission. Gail Reid has been serving at Stowe Ministry with Violet faithfully for a long time. Along with Gail are many other faithful servants who serve together every other month. Gail said, “One of my favorite things to do is to serve lunch at Stowe Mission, Columbus, OH. I was there with the team from Violet Baptist Church dishing out smiles, hellos, Hawaiian meatballs, rice, steamed veggies, and pudding.” If you are interested in learning more about serving at Stowe, please reach out to me. Spring has arrived, and with the arrival of Spring, it means Easter is coming up. We are days away from the Easter Eggstravaganza. On Saturday, April 5th, Violet will host a HUGE community Easter Egg hunt at Sycamore Creek Park, and we still need your help! We need a LOT of people to serve at this event, so please sign up to help! Easter also means we have a Good Friday Service and an extra service on Easter Sunday, and the Welcome Team could always use more friendly faces. This Easter season, would you please consider praying about how you can serve here at Violet? There is a place for everyone, and I would love nothing more than to help you get connected to a serving opportunity.

I look forward to hearing from you, Jamie McCleese
