® HE following letter was received by Dr. Charles Roberts, Superin tendent of the Hunan Bible Insti tute of Changsha, the China Branch of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. Dr. Roberts is stationed in Hong Kong at present, awaiting opportunity to return to our school, which is now in the hands of the Communists. This letter is from a graduate o f the Hunan Bible Institute, pastor of The Church of Saving Grace in the county o f Miyang. His testimony indicates how God is working behind the “ bamboo curtain” : “ Since last year our church has been gradually going forward in a bright way. The new authorities no longer distrust us. Last summer, however, it was diffi cult. We were all doubted and classed as reactionaries. Much fear came upon us and we could only look to God for help. Our regular church worship was stopped for six weeks. During this period we were obedient, patient, and waited in hopefulness. Praise God, it was not long before the proof of our manner of living became clear, and we were understood. “ During those six weeks we felt that the life of the Church was united as never before and the spirituality of everyone was very high. Sisters and brothers alike kept the same mind: to fast and to pray every morning at home until we got our freedom to meet and worship again. Our prayers were heard! The government itself sent us an official notice that we could carry on our wor ship. “ The real fact is that during those six weeks we never did stop meeting, for quietly we changed the time of meeting and reduced the number of people to gather at each time. Each Sunday morn ing we arose at dawn and celebrated the Lord’s Supper and worshiped Him. We feel it was the most precious ex perience that we have ever had. Hal lelujah ! “ Then we had another experience in which a change of officials brought us testing. The new official said that the Gospel Hall was an organization of the reactionary party. It looked very serious. The authorities wanted to take the church over for the training and the indoctrina tion of remaining adherents to the old Nationalist group. I was included and my name was on their list. “ Finally, after much prayer, I became bold. I went to see the official in charge. I debated with him on the subject of our Christian faith, but he would not be lieve me. I returned home feeling very bad and could not sleep that night. Short ly after this I was called to see the of ficial. I did not know what was going to happen. I was told again that the church was reactionary. I replied meekly that J U L Y , 1 9 5 0
our church has had no “ foreign” mis sionary for many years and that every thing was done by ourselves. I asked him please to give me proof that our church had in any way been active in political affairs. At first he was harsh and then answered, ‘No, no, I do not have any thing against you, and I will see that your name is crossed off the list im mediately’. He said they wanted to train all people in the New Democracy. Then I became bold again and said that the church was for the worship of God. ‘If you want me to train because I am a re actionary, I cannot for I am not one of them, but a follower of the Lord Jesus who loved the people. I f you want me to take training to be informed I will not resist, but I cannot do it in the church.’ Then he answered, ‘My representative to you has not understood this case, will you please excuse him?’ “ I was then free to go and returned home, praising God.” —Liu Meng Chen

While nations rage and vainly speak, Our God is on His throne;
In love and sovereign majesty His will He hath made known.
In all thy ways acknowledge Him, Bow humbly at His feet; Give honor to the Christ, God's Son, In Him is no defeat. Be girded in His righteousness Alone with God to stand; Then only will the Dove of Peace Brood over our fair land.
