Baptize your heart in devotion ere you wade into the stream of daily care. Christ Our Rescue A missionary heard a group of Chinamen discussing the various re ligions of China. One said: “ A China man was down in a deep pit, and wanted help to get out. Confucius came along and said: ‘If you had only kept my precepts you would not have fallen in.’ Buddha came to the mouth, of the pit and said: ‘Ah, poor fellow! if you were only up where I am, I would make it all right.’ ‘If,’ said the Chinaman, ‘I were where you are, I should not want your help.’ But, then came Jesus Christ along with tears in His eyes, and jumped right into the pit, and lifted the poor man out.” —Christian Herald

Thank God, it is not so. He can, in His own perfect way, give us the certainty of His mind in any given case . . . We should never act or move in uncertainty. If we are not sure let us be quiet and wait. Very often it happens that we harass and fret ourselves about movements that God would not have us make at all. A person once said to a friend, “ I am quite at a loss to know which way to turn.” “ Then, don’t turn at all,” was the friend’s wise reply. But it is “ the meek He will guide in judgment, and teach His way.” We' must never forget this. — C. H. Mackintosh Get alone—alone with God! Pour out your heart, tell Him everything, and He unll bless, He will answer, He unll deliver. —Gospel Herald Arthur Brisbane on Atheism A Russian university in Leningrad is opened to “ teach atheism.” Three hundred students, forty-seven of them women, will prepare them selves . for “ active propaganda of militant atheism.” If any newspaper is published in Heaven that news will go on the comic page. It suggests a colony o f ants on a railroad right of way organizing a university to prove that there is no such thing as an engineer. —Herald a/nd Examiner The fool has said in his heart, “ There is no God!” What unll he say when he meets God? The Purifying Hope “When He shall appear,” we read, “we shall be like Him.” Like Him in all His greatness, all His gentleness, His peacefulness, His joyfulness, His purity; and “ everyone that hath this hope in him purifieth himself even as he is pure.” He has built us, and bought us, and comes to dwell in His house in our hearts. We are created to give God pleasure—not by effort, but all of grace, He abiding in us and we in Him. Sanctification is not a matter of wrestling, but of resting. That we may be prepared for His coming, let us put on “ the whole armour of God.” —.Bishop J. Taylor Smith

Sod 's Four Freedoms Freedom from Want. “ They that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing” . (Psa. 34:10). Freedom from Fear. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me” (Psa. 23:4). Freedom of Worship. “ Though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth . . . to us there is but one God, the Father . . . and one Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 8:5, 6). Freedom of Speech. “ Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, 0 Lord, my strength, and my re deemer” (Psa. 19:14). —From “ Help and Food for the Household of Faith99 Every Christian is a multi-million aire, but many do not know it. Our ticket includes everything. — Mr. Trumbull The Marvels of the Watermelon “ I am not so much o f a farmer as some people claim,” said William Jennings Bryan, with a twinkle, “ but I have observed the watermelon seed. It has the power of drawing from the ground and through itself 200.000 times its weight; and when you can tell me how it takes this material and out o f it colors an out side surface beyond the imitation of art, and then forms inside of it a white rind and within that again a red heart, thickly inlaid with black seeds, each one o f which in turn is capable of drawing through itself 200.000 times its weight—when you can explain to me the mystery of a watermelon, you can ask me to ex plain the mystery of God.” An ounce of faith is better than a ton of learning. Specific Guidance We have the fullest assurance that our God can and does guide His chil dren in all things. He can signify His mind to us as to this or that par ticular act or movement. If not, where are we? . . . Are we to be drifted hither and thither by the tide of circumstances? Are we left to blind chance, or to the mere im pulse of our own will? J U L Y , 1 9 5 0
