NOVEMBER 2024

www.franklinbuildingsupply.com | 208-514-2200 | 9222 W. Barnes Dr., Boise, ID 83709 HAPPY TO BE HERE!

As we approach Thanksgiving, it’s natural to turn our attention to what we’re thankful for and perhaps all too often take for granted.

“happy to be here” can have a real effect, too. By reminding ourselves and each other that we are thankful for the jobs we get to do and the organization we share

I’ve seen recent documentaries of sports teams and special military operations and was struck that some start or end every group meeting or gathering with some version of the phrase, “Happy to be here.” While there’s a cultural reason these teams or groups are in a habit of saying things together in unison, there’s some applicability to business and perhaps a lesson we can learn. It’s incredibly easy for any of us to go through our days focused on all the challenges or obstacles we face, big or small, at work or at home. Those challenges are real and don’t disappear just because we utter a phrase, but the power of regularly reminding ourselves that we’re

ownership of, we counterbalance the challenges and obstacles. This gives us perspective, which keeps especially small challenges and obstacles in better perspective.

The reality is that we have all chosen to work for and remain at FBS. No one is forcing us — it’s a choice we make and one we make freely every morning. We all have people counting on us at work and home, and we have financial obligations we must meet, but those could be attended to in any number of jobs or at any number of companies. We have chosen to be at FBS doing the work we do. We have chosen to build the company we’re building. We have chosen to serve the customers we’re serving. Being mindful of the choice we’ve made, what would a healthier posture of thanksgiving and appreciation look like for us all, not just in this season, but every day? Would saying out loud, to ourselves or even in unison with others at the start or end of a meeting, that we’re “happy to be here” or “thankful to be here” make a difference in our attitude or ability to handle what comes our way? I know it does for me. I hope it will work for you.

Thankful to be here,

-Levi Smith PRESIDENT

HIGH FIVES!

Guide From: Ian Beane, Fruitland Door and Finish To: Cherie Littleton, Fruitland Door and Finish

I want to highlight Cherie Littleton, our Fruitland Door mentor. She is always getting with our new hires, ensuring everything is going well for them, and addressing something if it is not. Thank you, Cherie. Wow From: Tyler Honn, Boise CSR To: Steve Meyers, Boise Estimating In preparation to ship a house pack, Steve Meyers saw an issue with a beam during estimating, and together, we found a solution. The customer was very impressed with the detail we put into the estimating process. Good job, Steve, for outstanding customer service. Strive From: James Dowen, Corporate To: Ryan Taylor and Mitchell Sherman, Maintenance Shop

Easy From: Duane Dowell, TVID Interior To: Brittany Bourget, TVID Interior

As a project manager for TVID Interiors, it can sometimes be hard to be everywhere you need to be at the same time, that is, unless you have someone to make it easy for you. Brittany Bourget does that, both for us PMs and our builders. I was recently in such a spot where our builder made some on-the-fly changes and we needed to get the product out to our installers. At my first communication with Brittany and the installers, she hopped right in and helped get everything wrangled and to the job. She made it easy for the builder to complete this change order during the original installation, and she made it easy for me to know things were handled. I don’t know if I could ask for anything more. Safe From: Ben Thomas, McCall To: Aaron Branstetter and Quentin Mettie, McCall Aaron and Quentin just turned in one of the most thorough safety audits I’ve ever seen. They caught lots of little issues and added a bunch of LEAN ideas as well. Nice job, guys. That looks like ownership to me!

High five to Ryan Taylor and Mitchell Sherman. They took on the task of rebuilding and fixing an engine for the McCall store, saving the company $10,000. They got it back running into the fleet and ready for deliveries.

LOCATION HIGHLIGHT: MCCALL

At FBS McCall, we strive to offer a great experience for valued and potential customers. Our Inside Sales team is often the first interaction customers have with us, and we want to make sure their experience is positive! The Wheeler sisters, Ashley and Jordan, primarily take care of walk-in and phone-in customers and orders. Friendly and helpful, as well as knowledgeable about key building supplies, Jordan and Ashley continue to wow our customers with great service that is hard to beat at the competitor. They also make sure the front of the house is spotless, warm, and inviting to customers. Andie Toscan helps at the sales counter and is the first voice call-in customers hear. She is great at helping the customer get what is needed or get the customer to the right person with prompt follow-up. Rod Skiftun and Wayne Dingman both help out up front, too, but often you’ll find Rod in the warehouse checking in freight, making sure the facility is in tip-top shape, and keeping our shelves stocked and products ready for sale. Wayne can often be found on a forklift – out cutting and loading EWP and other building materials, as well as constantly restocking units to make sure the next customer has fresh and clean material to choose from. We pride ourselves on getting customers loaded up with what they need safely and efficiently.

Tying it all together is Anthony Henry, who has this to say about the team: “I’m especially proud of this team because we leave our egos in the parking lot. Everyone is an excellent collaborator who’s unafraid to ask for help when needed. As a result, the skill set at the sales counter runs deeper than ever, and we all genuinely enjoy our time at work!” They are also not afraid to get their hands dirty — helping in many other ways, such as repainting our store, loading boards for customers, or assisting a sales rep in placing orders with a vendor — all with a friendly and helpful attitude. FBS McCall is fortunate to showcase such a fun and skilled team that works together to make building easy!

Why Do We Celebrate Employee Ownership?

At Franklin Building Supply, we’re not just employees — we’re owners. Being an Employee-Owned company means that each of us has a stake in the business. You probably hear this all the time! But, to truly harness the benefits of employee ownership, we need to understand what it means to “think like an owner” and how that mindset can lead to greater success, both for the company and ourselves.

When you work as an owner, your contributions go beyond completing tasks. Every idea you bring forward, every extra effort you put in, helps drive company performance and increases the value of the business. As a result, our share price grows, which directly impacts your financial rewards. The more we can do together to help Franklin Building Supply thrive, the more we all benefit financially — that’s the ownership advantage. However, thinking like an owner extends beyond just financial incentives. It involves taking personal responsibility and always seeking ways to improve. Let’s consider a few common workplace situations. When a new hire struggles with learning, an employee might help because they were asked. However, an owner steps up because they understand that training others leads to improved company performance. This creates a positive ripple effect that benefits everyone.

Similarly, when coworkers are dealing with frustrations or complaints, employees may wait for management to handle the problem. Owners, however, look for ways to encourage resolution among peers because they know a harmonious workplace contributes to better performance and, ultimately, a higher share price. Even when faced with challenges like a drop in the company’s share price, an owner doesn’t just shrug it off. They ask, “What can I do to improve the outcome next year?” Whether it’s helping coworkers follow best practices or offering top-notch customer service, small efforts by each of us can lead to big results. It’s not just about our stock price; it’s about making Franklin Building Supply a safe and enjoyable place to work. – Anthony Henry MCCALL EO GUIDE
