PUBLISHER’S NOTE
N ovember has a unique way of making us pause and appreciate the little moments that fill our lives with joy. As the temperature drops and we prepare for the winter months, it is important to take a minute and give thanks for family, friends, and health. As Thanksgiving approaches, we look forward to gathering with loved ones, sharing old stories, and creating new memories to be shared for years to come. This month, we are excited to introduce the Brahn Family, whose Spring Lake roots run deep. For 5 generations, members of the Brahn Family have been devoted to service and commitment to the town they call home. We also learn about The Spring Lake American Legion Post 432 and honor the men and women that defend our freedoms. We are forever grateful for their sacrifices. Of course, we want to send a heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, who make it possible to bring Spring Lakers’ A Season of Gratitude

A Legacy of Service
Post 432
BY KATIE SCHRADER - EDITOR
V eterans Day is a day of reverence and reflection. It provides us an opportunity to honor the men and women who stood and continue to stand in defense of freedom. It’s a day of gratitude for the sacrifice of our veterans and their families. HONORING OUR VETERANS Each year, the Spring Lake community gathers to honor its veterans through meaningful events led by the Spring Lake American Legion Post 432. One of the highlights of these events is the Veterans Day ceremonies, which begin at 0900 at Spring Lake Heights Memorial Park and continue with a service at the Spring Lake Monument across from the Fire House at 1100, followed by a luncheon at the Spring Lake Manor. These ceremonies are a testament to the town’s deep

respect for its veterans and the ties that bind the community together. A LEGACY OF SERVICE The Spring Lake American Legion Post 432 was chartered in 1947 by WWII veterans, and many local residents and business owners are related to the forty founders of the Post. Names such as Marucci, Brown, Gaskin, Erbe, Patterson, Clayton, and Hurley are only some of the familiar names. From presenting the Colors at Memorial Day and Veterans Day services to commemorating 9/11, they stand as a pillar of honor and respect. Since 1947, they have educated the public on the care and respectful disposal of the American flag, all while creating moments that unite the community in remembrance and celebration of our nation’s heroes.
community, tradition, and the importance of family.
HONORING PAST AND FUTURE
Much like Veterans Day, the fishing contest is a way to honor the past while creating memories for the future. Post 432 remains committed to its mission of supporting veterans, fostering patriotism, and creating opportunities for youth to learn and grow through events like this. As we approach Veterans Day, find the time to pay tribute to those who have defended our freedoms and the families who stood by their side. commitment extends to the youth as well, with programs that encourage learning and growth through activities like baseball, debate clubs, and fishing. FISHING TRADITION Each year, as trout season opens, Post 432 members set up their tents, measuring tables, and weigh scales to record the fishing stats for eager young anglers. This year, the fishing contest celebrated its 60th year. The Spring Lake Fishing Contest is more than just a day of fishing. It represents the values of

LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP One of the challenges Dylan faced was logistics— coordinating volunteers, ensuring everyone had the right tools, and staying flexible. A valuable lesson came when Andy Clark, a seasoned Scout Dad, pointed out that the sidewalk around the project site should be leveled. This meant Dylan had to adjust his plan on the fly, extending the project timeline by removing part of the sidewalk to ensure everything was not only visually appealing but, more importantly, safe. It was a challenge, but Dylan understood the importance of doing the job right, even if it took more time and effort. A LASTING IMPACT For Dylan, one the most rewarding parts of the project wasn’t just seeing it completed but realizing the permanence of his contribution. When he was done, he recognized his mark on a historic building that itself was created through the same type of community members who had donated both
their time and resources. To add something to such a historic site and know it will impact people in a meaningful way is the true essence of community. Dylan’s project was more than just a physical addition to the Community House; it was a testament to his leadership, problem-solving, and commitment to service. And it wasn’t just Dylan who grew during the process—his team of volunteers gained invaluable experience under his direction. A SCOUT’S FOUNDATION Dylan knows his success wouldn’t have been possible without the guidance of leaders like Scout Master John Sisti. Sisti, a legend in the local scouting community, has helped produce more Eagle Scouts in Monmouth County than anyone else. With decades of experience and the prestigious Silver Beaver Award under his belt, Sisti has dedicated his life to teaching boys to become leaders, problem-solvers, and responsible citizens. “The time and energy he puts into these boys is an incredible gift” shares Dylan’s mom, Marybeth. “The leadership skills boys gain in Scouts are invaluable. Everything is centered around the boys running their troop, learning to work together, and realizing their role in the community. The friendships and life skills are unmatched.” LOOKING AHEAD With his Eagle project behind him, Dylan has his sights set on guiding others, including his younger brother, who is working towards his own Eagle Scout rank. He knows first hand the value of passing on the skills it takes to grow leaders. For anyone thinking about joining Boy Scouts, it’s never too late. Scouting is a journey that stays with you for life. If you’re curious about getting involved, meetings are every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Firehouse. For more information, contact John Sisti at Johnsistinj@gmail.com.

T he path to isn’t just about badges and ceremonies—it’s about leadership, perseverance, and leaving a lasting impact becoming an Eagle Scout on a community. The Eagle Scout rank is the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts program. Since the program’s start in 1911, only about four percent of Scouts have reached this impressive milestone. The rigorous process requires a minimum of
BUILDING A VISION Dylan Thomas’ service project journey began by recognizing a problem and ended with a project that will serve the Spring Lake community for decades. While passing the Spring Lake Community House, Dylan observed that bikes were often left scattered across the lawn. Dylan knew it was a problem he wanted to solve and began by meeting with the Spring Lake Community House Theatre executive director, Ms. Pat Barry, to discuss his idea to create a bluestone patio including a large bike rack for students to neatly store and safely lock up their bikes. After receiving her support and writing a detailed proposal, Dylan presented his idea to the Town Council. His years in the Boy Scouts had prepared him for this moment. With poise and confidence, he made his case and won approval for the project. From there, Dylan secured donors to fund the materials and supplies and organized a team of volunteers—mostly younger scouts and a few helpful parents. Over two full weekends, under Dylan’s careful leadership, the team worked tirelessly to complete the patio and install the bike rack.

OUR SCHOOLS
BY AVERY BOUCEK - GRADE 6 ELECTIVES THAT INSPIRE
A s students rise to grades 6-8, many feel there is more of an emphasis on earning good grades. They begin to feel pressure to do well in school and more time is dedicated to studying. To ensure that students are not just focused on grades and have more of a growth mindset, H.W Mountz introduced an electives program. Electives are 30 minute classes on a wide variety of topics ranging from nail art to flag football to robotics. Each class runs for two weeks. Within the two week time period, students are exposed to new interests, learn how to collaborate with others, and express their creativity. These classes also create an environment where students can make mistakes while learning and release the pressure from the more academic classes. Administrators and teachers were very thoughtful when selecting a wide range of topics to appeal to a number of different interests. Offered electives have included art, sports, science, games, technology, cooking and woodshop. Students are empowered to explore their different interests by voting on the electives that are most intriguing to them. Regardless of the topic, the teachers are committed to creating a place where students can explore their interests, learn, make mistakes and collaborate with other students from all three grade levels. Last spring, collaboration with others reached new levels in our woodshop where students built homes for animals in the recovery unit at Rescue Ridge in Howell. Students
from HW Mountz worked with students from Avon, Belmar, Brielle, Manasquan, Sea Girt and Spring Lake Heights. Together they made a plan to tackle each component of the house. Then they broke off into groups to build the pieces of the house and then they came back together to assemble all of the pieces. This required students to listen to one another, communicate clearly, and problem solve. After the house was finished, they gave it to Rescue Ridge so the animals that were in the recovery unit felt comfortable and safe. When speaking with students who have taken these electives it becomes clear that the program is working. Sixth grader Charlotte Moran explained that she feels stress towards her school work, but electives are a way for her to release that stress and take her mind off of tests. She said, “Electives are the things I look forward to everyday.” Charlotte also recognized the opportunity that electives provide. She has been able to work with students across multiple grades and enjoys the creative outlet. In today’s competitive school environment it is easy for students to become too focused only on grades. H.W. Mountz has developed an electives program that reminds students of the importance of balancing grades with exploring interests. This program empowers students to discover what they like to do outside of the classroom while learning how to work with one another. Students look forward to electives everyday.

Fire Chief. In the Brahn household, service was a team effort. His wife, Emma, became an unsung hero of the First Aid Squad, tracking down Charles to respond to calls. C.W. was one of the first on site of the Hindenburg crash and directed many of the First Aid efforts after the Morro Castle tragedy. Emma’s commitment to the First Aid earned her honorary membership in 1937. Together, they continued a legacy of helping others. Their son, Charles “Russell” Brahn, joined Goodwill Fire Company #2 in 1959. Like his father and grandfather before him, Russ dedicated his life to both family and community. Rising through the ranks to become Fire Chief in 1979. Russell’s service was multifaceted. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the 1950s, he returned to Spring Lake as a postman before joining Fort Monmouth, where he worked on classified missile guidance systems. Despite his career achievements, it was his commitment to the firehouse that endured until the day he passed, overseeing the Santa Rides, where his postal expertise helped ensure gifts were delivered throughout town. C.R. amplified the family legacy, with all five of his children, including his son Don, finding their own paths of service within Goodwill. His grandchildren continue this tradition, ensuring that the Brahn name remains at the forefront of Spring Lake’s firefighting community. civic duty. Don dedicated over 50 years to the Goodwill Fire Company, serving as Chief Engineer for 40 years. He recalls a time when the sound of the fire whistle signaled action. Fires were more frequent, and the camaraderie among firefighters was something he cherished, especially “gearing up” alongside his brothers, Tommy and Russ. “As a kid, growing up at the firehouse was the best. Members took us under their wing. Watching our dad go out on calls, the trucks, the whole atmosphere— it was all we knew.” Don also fondly reflects on his trips to the First Aid and taking the ambulance with his grandfather to get gas at the borough yard. It seems fitting that after graduation, Don began his remarkable 47-year career with Spring Lake’s Public Works Department. His sons, Don Jr. and Brett, followed in his footsteps and together they have worked side by side, ensuring the town’s infrastructure remains in top shape. Don Jr. reflects on his father’s dedication, particularly his tireless efforts after Hurricane Sandy, when they both were deeply involved in recovery efforts. “I always knew my parents had an impact on Spring Lake. It wasn’t until I worked for the town and started meeting more townspeople that I realized how many lives they’ve touched,” Don Jr. shares. Margie, a police dispatcher and crossing guard, has been equally committed to the town’s wellbeing. For 42 years, she’s served on the Spring Lake First Aid Squad, adding yet another layer of civic responsibility to the family name. Margie’s childhood memories of trips to Pier Beach with her cousins and Don’s fond recollections of fishing as a kid with his friends and grandfather reflect the deep roots they have planted in Spring Lake. For Don and Margie, every inch of Spring Lake is their home. Their house, which was constructed by Don alongside family and friends, stands as a testament to
