civic duty. Don dedicated over 50 years to the Goodwill Fire Company, serving as Chief Engineer for 40 years. He recalls a time when the sound of the fire whistle signaled action. Fires were more frequent, and the camaraderie among firefighters was something he cherished, especially “gearing up” alongside his brothers, Tommy and Russ. “As a kid, growing up at the firehouse was the best. Members took us under their wing. Watching our dad go out on calls, the trucks, the whole atmosphere— it was all we knew.” Don also fondly reflects on his trips to the First Aid and taking the ambulance with his grandfather to get gas at the borough yard. It seems fitting that after graduation, Don began his remarkable 47-year career with Spring Lake’s Public Works Department. His sons, Don Jr. and Brett, followed in his footsteps and together they have worked side by side, ensuring the town’s infrastructure remains in top shape. Don Jr. reflects on his father’s dedication, particularly his tireless efforts after Hurricane Sandy, when they both were deeply involved in recovery efforts. “I always knew my parents had an impact on Spring Lake. It wasn’t until I worked for the town and started meeting more townspeople that I realized how many lives they’ve touched,” Don Jr. shares. Margie, a police dispatcher and crossing guard, has been equally committed to the town’s wellbeing. For 42 years, she’s served on the Spring Lake First Aid Squad, adding yet another layer of civic responsibility to the family name. Margie’s childhood memories of trips to Pier Beach with her cousins and Don’s fond recollections of fishing as a kid with his friends and grandfather reflect the deep roots they have planted in Spring Lake. For Don and Margie, every inch of Spring Lake is their home. Their house, which was constructed by Don alongside family and friends, stands as a testament to

the strong community they’ve built. In retirement, Don reflects with gratitude on having “it all right here” and never wanting to leave Spring Lake. He looks forward to helping his kids and grandkids while also continuing to help shape their family legacy of service. “We have everything we could ever need,” Don says. “I never want to leave. You can carry me out.” Spring Lake was built on the quiet yet profound dedication of families like the Brahns. Their legacy serves as a reminder that the strength of a community lies in the selfless acts of those who give their time, energy, and hearts to others.
