Financing Further Education Education can be financially demanding. It is always advisable to carefully consider your personal financial circumstances and also research other sources of funding before making an application. It is important to understand the following criteria in order to consider the cost implications: (1) Residency - to be eligible for Free (Tuition) Fees you must be resident within the EU for 3 of the last 5 years (This applies to Irish citizens too). (2) Nationality - to be eligible for a state grant (SUSI) you need to have a stamp 4, however not all stamp 4 visas are eligible. You can find further information on this here. (3) Reckonable Income - You must fall within the reckonable income. NB – In order to qualify for the Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) payment you must have been on a relevant Social welfare payment for at least 6 months prior to commencement of the course for level 7 and under and 9 months for Level 8 and above. Students Universal Support Scheme (SUSI) The Student Grant Scheme is the main financial support scheme for students studying in Ireland and abroad. It is also known as the SUSI grant because the Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) is the awarding authority for the Student Grant Scheme. Student grants are divided into Maintenance Grants, Fee Grants and further increased dependent on proximity to the college or university (Adjacent or Non-Adjacent grants). Additional Financial Supports The Student Assistance Fund (SAF) assists with financial difficulties.
