Visitor Guide Accessible Experiences

BeachAbility The dimensions of the chair must be suitable to accommodate your size. An adult chair has a seat width and depth of 45cm (18 inches) and a child/small adult chair has a seat width and depth of 36cm (14 inches). The maximum weight the adult chair can hold is 25 stone or 158kg. BeachAbility has a friendly team of supporters, one of whom will meet you at the beach location. They will provide a demonstration of the wheelchair and see you safely on your way. The whole process takes no more than 15 minutes. Please note that supporters are unable to help you get into the beach wheelchairs. You will need to be accompanied by an adult helper to assist with transfers and to push the wheelchair.

Tips & Practical Considerations

• Because staffing is limited, especially in off-peak seasons, book in advance whenever possible. • Always check tidal and weather conditions before your booking – slipways can be steep and parts of the beach may be submerged at high tide. • Dress in layers and bring sun protection – the charity provides blankets, but weather can be cooler at the shoreline. • Ensure your helper is physically able to push the chair across soft sand and negotiate slipways. • If you envisaged a longer beach stay, discuss with BeachAbility whether an extended booking is possible at time of reservation.
