THE POWER OUTSIDE
realization of what I was doing clicked. I was scaling a solid granite rock with only cables and my hand grip to keep me from sliding to the bottom. I joked with my nieces that they would have to be the ones to take my kids up Half Dome when they are old enough because there was no way I was going to climb up there again! Of course, we all know I’m mostly joking. I can’t wait to carry on this family tradition with my children when they are old enough. It’s a physical and mental feat, one that shows you what you are truly capable of doing. In fact, on our most recent hike up Half Dome, we met a 92-year-old who was making the trek for the first time — a lifelong dream of his. He decided that’s what he was going to do, and he did it! It’s a great reminder of the power we all have within ourselves, no matter what the obstacle. As summer begins to wind down, take a moment to be outdoors. Whether it’s around the fire in your backyard or hiking in Yosemite, Exploring and Appreciating the Great Outdoors
Growing up, my family would go camping in Yosemite National Park or Big Sur, California. We would spend our days hiking and marveling at the natural world around us. We never grew tired of hikes up Half Dome in Yosemite or the way the air just felt different when we were there. But my favorite part of the day happened right at our campsite: the campfire. Time is different when you’re camping. You spend all day working at the campsite, hiking, fishing, and just staying active. When 9 p.m. rolls around and the sun finally sets, everyone is exhausted. And it’s in that time, when we all gather around the fire, make a few s’mores, and swap stories, that I find the most joy. There’s nothing like being around a campfire after an exciting day in the wilderness with the ones you love. It’s a moment when no one is consumed by their phone or a TV screen. You spend time laughing, joking, and sharing stories with each other, connecting with each other after a day spent connecting with the outdoors. These days, I still go camping with my family, and my husband goes on an annual camping trip with our boys to Yosemite. (My daughter and I go to the spa during those trips!) I still find that no matter what we do on our trips or the exciting things we see, the campfire remains my favorite part of every
trip. There’s something mesmerizing and comforting about a campfire.
While National Campfire Day on Aug. 5 is bringing these memories to the surface, it’s also causing me to recall some of my most memorable times spent outdoors and exploring our California wilderness with my family. There are no camping trips or locations that stand out as “the best memory ever,” but there are many small moments and opportunities I fondly appreciate. For example, my parents took my siblings and me hiking at Yosemite’s Half Dome several times when I was growing up. It has sort of become a family tradition! For those who don’t know, Half Dome is a 14-mile, out-and-back trail through Yosemite. Hikers gain 5,000 feet in elevation, as they traverse over waterfalls and up the side of what can only be described as slick, steep rock. The last portion of the trek to the top of Half Dome includes cables for hikers to hold on to and hoist themselves up to the top and back down again. It’s treacherous, but the view and sense of accomplishment afterward are worth it. Recently, I was able to hike up Half Dome with my nieces. As mentioned, I have done this hike multiple times, but it was this particular hike where the
enjoy all that the great outdoors has to offer.

Master Your Money With Reverse Budgeting DECODING ELECTION YEAR STOCK MARKET TRENDS Bulls, Bears, and Ballots — Oh, My!
Looking to the Future Investors are always trying to hedge their bets and plan for long-term economic downturns, another pattern worth looking into. According to T. Rowe Price, a global investment management firm, there’s a 22% probability of an election happening during a recession. What’s interesting, however, are the numbers in the years that follow. There’s a 57% chance the following 365 days will have a recession, with the second and third years coming in at 30% and 17%, respectively. The big question remains: Will the winner of this year’s race create an unstable market? Rob Haworth, senior investment strategy director at U.S. Bank Wealth Management, says, “At the presidential level, the differences between the candidates, from an investor’s perspective, are not as significant as many would expect.”
Making money in the stock market can often evolve into a pattern recognition game, with investors searching for any repetition in past data. Many traders and analysts have noticed a particular market trend in election years — and some wonder what that means for 2024. Let’s look at the data gleaned from previous years and uncover how (if at all) it applies now. Emerging Patterns A bull market is an economically stable time when prices are increasing. In contrast, a bear market is when stocks are losing value. Typically, stock market patterns in presidential election years show a weaker first half (bear), followed by a dip around May. After June, the index usually rises (bull), and the Dow’s second-half return in election years is an average of 8.6% as opposed to 3% in other years.
So, based on history, the stock market usually performs weaker at the beginning of an election year due to economic
Change is constant in the markets, so don’t base your entire portfolio on this historical data. Trends like this are never guaranteed to repeat — they’re simply interesting patterns discerned in previous years. Instead, use this information to inspire your investments and
uncertainty surrounding the candidate’s policies. As the year goes on and the parties solidify
their plans throughout their campaigns, that ambiguity wanes, and the market picks back up.

Setting out on a hike without all the necessary gear and proper planning can be a risky and sometimes unpleasant experience — after all, you never want to be stranded without water, a first aid kit, or snacks! Just like the preparations necessary for a successful hike, estate planning requires foresight and careful planning. Just like you wouldn’t (hopefully) set out on a hike without proper footwear and supplies, you shouldn’t approach your future without a well- thought-out estate plan. The Importance of Planning Ahead Imagine setting out on an impromptu hike along a challenging trail. Without preparation, you might find yourself dehydrated, hungry, or lost. This scenario parallels the consequences of not having an estate plan (or failing to update it). Without one, your loved ones could face unnecessary stress, financial difficulties, and legal complications. Be Prepared On a hike, water and food are essential to keep your energy levels up and prevent dehydration. In estate planning, having essential supplies translates into ensuring financial stability and providing for your family. Adequate insurance, savings, and investments are the sustenance you need! The right shoes provide support and protection for every hike. Similarly, a well- crafted estate plan offers the legal framework and security your family needs. This includes a will, power of attorney, and health care directives. You can’t forget a map! You need some sort of direction to guide you safely through the hike. In estate planning, a clear vision of your goals and assets acts as your map. Understanding what you want to achieve with your estate plan helps guide your decisions and make sure your assets are distributed the way you want. Even the best-planned hikes can encounter unexpected obstacles, such as sudden weather changes or a twisted ankle. That’s why emergency supplies and a first aid kit are so important, just like an estate plan is for unforeseen events. This includes setting up contingencies like guardianship for minor children and updating your plan as life circumstances change. Remember, the effort you put into planning today will pay off in the long run and provide clarity and protection for you and your loved ones. So, lace up your hiking boots, pack your essentials, and head out with confidence, both on the trails and in life.
