MY CIPP

What the policy team does fo

Y ou may have heard us mention the policy team on several occasions, but do you understand the scope of the work we do and, more importantly, how it impacts you? In this article, I’ll go through some of the core tasks the policy team performs, and what that means for you as a pay professional. Latest updates impacting the payroll profession As you know, there’s a lot to keep track of as a member of the pay professions. If you miss something, you risk non-compliance

“Let me assure you – this work is extremely important and absolutely has an impact, and the Government does listen to the feedback it receives”

if your role requires a deeper level of understanding. Because the CIPP was granted a Royal Charter, we have a duty to the entire payroll profession, not just our members. Therefore, our news articles are free for all to view. However, for members, we send a convenient email roundup of the week’s news every Wednesday. This allows you to see the latest items at a glance and dive into the topics which interest you or are relevant to your business. Webinars and events Another side to the content we develop is the interactive presentations we offer. They can be delivered online, like our BeKnowledgeable series and the National Payroll Week webinars, or in-person at events such as our BeConnected forum and Annual Conference and Exhibition plenary session. These presentations have a similar ethos and principle to the news articles, delivering the key information required for compliance in an easy and digestible way. It’s not always easy – the number of questions we get tells me everything I need to know about the complexities of modern payroll operations,

but we try our best. What we intend to do is cultivate a community which asks questions, learns and understands in a safe space. We hope everyone leaves the sessions we put on having a better understanding of the topic at hand. For you, these will count towards your continued professional development (CPD) and can be logged for your CIPP membership and potentially other professional memberships you hold where the subject may be relevant. CPD is a necessity for pay professionals, ensuring you keep astride of the changing legislative and compliance landscape to best serve your employees or clients. Government representation This is a big one. It’s a core part of what the policy and research team is here to do and has possibly one of the biggest impacts on the industry. It is, however, a bit less clear cut as to how it can impact you individually and can be a bit nebulous to explain. And in some cases, we may not be able to publicly talk about some pieces of information. Sometimes it can seem like the Government and its bodies do what they want to do without regard for how it will operate in the

which can lead to: l potential fines l penalties l reputational damage.

To find out all you need to know to stay afloat would be a full-time job (I would know, it’s literally our job), but that’s what we can help with. The policy team is responsible for the news that goes out on our website, key updates and breakdowns of: l Government news l policy l legislation l research l events l fiscal statements, such as the budget l and more. These articles provide a high-level overview, giving you the key facts and providing signposting to further reading
