REWARD
How Professional connects, informs and inspires our team at Cox & Co More than a magazine
A t Cox & Co, Professional magazine isn’t just something we flick through with a morning coffee. It’s a vital thread running through our working week, our team culture and our professional development as payroll professionals. It informs, educates, connects and yes, even entertains. For us, it’s the heartbeat of our link to the wider payroll world. Every member of our team (there are seven of us) is a CIPP individual member and proudly receives their own copy of Professional to their home address. That means no squabbling over who gets it first – although you’ll hear a fair few competitive cries of, “Did you see that article on…?”, as we race to the office and share what we’ve learned. Payroll is fast-moving. Legislation, technology and best practices never stand still. That’s why we rely on the magazine to keep us up to date with current and upcoming changes. Recent changes around mandatory payrolling of benefits and updates to statutory sick pay are both prime examples of areas where the magazine helps to summarise, contextualise and explain developments clearly and accessibly. Yes, we can search online, but Professional gives us trusted, curated insights which we can take the time to discuss as a team.

This is a team meeting where we dive into recent Advisory Service questions from the magazine and explore how we would approach the scenarios presented. We cross-check our answers with those in Professional (a bit like a quiz, taking it in turns to answer), and
it’s a great way to ensure we’re aligned with best practice and CIPP guidance. It builds our confidence, sharpens our thinking and opens large discussions around how we handle more complex remuneration or benefit scenarios, particularly in a world where attracting and retaining talent is changing how pay and reward are structured. This can very often lead to us making internal process changes to improve – it’s a never-ending cycle of reflecting and perfecting. As a bureau working with hundreds of clients, all with their own unique policies, mergers, restructures and practices, this knowledge-sharing is crucial. Whether it’s understanding how different human resources (HR) approaches feed through payroll or spotting pitfalls before they arise, Professional is a touchstone for our team. One of the most powerful things about Professional is that it reminds us that no matter your role or how long you’ve been in payroll, your voice matters. We’ve encouraged our team members from all levels to contribute articles, whether they’re about apprenticeships or pensions, or the
